Hi , I posted this question on Implement alley also so don't distress too much . How do you size a disk to a tractor ? Is there some rule of thumb ? Is it determined by horsepower or weight of tractor ? I guess that there's a number of variables involved . One other question , Is it a foolish notion to try and pull double duty with a disk meaning I have a Farmall M and a 1755 Oliver , about 7000 lbs and 50 hp difference . Question is - if the disk has a main frame width of 14'and unfolded is 20' not including the furrow fillers would the M pull it with the wings up and the 1755D pull it with it unfolded assuming 18"-20" blades ? Thanks ...Randy

Better check your hydraulics first. Takes a pretty good pump in an M to lift a 20' disc.

Good point ! Hadn't even thought of that ! Just goes to prove the value of the collective mind ! It sounds like it's unanimous that a 20' disk will be to much for my oliver and even folded will be to much for my m . I guess I'll keep looking for a good disk with 7-1/2" spacing in the 16-18 ' range for the oliver . I have a 12-1/2-13' krause now . I just wanted to have only one disk I could use with both so I suppose I'll fix this krause up and use it till I find a better one . Take care ...Randy

If your M has been overhauled with the oversize sleeve and pistons, and has otherwise been tweaked into the 50 hp range, you might be able to pull it. If you can't lift it, try a larger diamater cylinder. A 4" or 5" diameter cylinder will lift a pretty good sized load.

I have a 1066, dualed up, and it toys with a 20' 475 IH Disk.

To do a good job disking, you have to pull it at a pretty good speed. Plus, you don't want your tractors popping hemoroids while doing it. I would limit your M to 10' amd the 17 to 14-15'.

Hi , How fast is good enough for disking ? With my neighbors 26' disk ( about 14' mainframe )with the wings folded and 22" blades I was cutting fresh sod at about 7 mph last fall . What a mess I made !!! No more primary disk tillage ! Now I have a 4-16 plow I've got to learn to use and then disk lightly over the top to smooth things out some . I know , a good plow job doesn't require a disk afterwords . But I've got to learn to plow first . Take care ! ...Randy

Just my opinion here, but its pretty hard to judge what it'll pull without doing it. Just soil type can change things drastically. Not to mention, offset or tandem disk. How big of disk blades and how deeply are the blades dished. If you have a disk with small blades that aren't dished as much it isn't going to cut nearly as deep as a disk with large blades that are really dished. Also, how deep do you want to go, just knock things around a bit, or do you want to do some serious tillage? You'll have to consider all that before you can really judge what it'll pull.

OK Dave , Up until now I've been to timid to ask this question . But you brought it up . What's the difference between the offset and tandem disks ? On the oliver 263 I'm looking at the blades are about 18" , have a shallow dish and are spaced 9-10" apart . All I want to do is knock things around some to smooth the hay fields after I plow . I made the mistake of deep primary tillage on grass with a big bladed disk last fall . What a mess ! I've since bought a plow and still need to learn how to use it . All this is just for fun not for profit . I make 6 acres of hay for my wifes 5 horses . Hopefully I can get a couple acres of the lower pasture cleared of rocks and plant that to grass also . It's got what I call iceberg rocks in it . They've never been removed in the hundred years this place has been around so I'm guessing that that's the reason , iceberg rocks . About 3-4 foot diameter rocks on the surface that have their widest part somewhere under ground like an iceberg in the ocean . If I disk after I plow I don't need to go more than a couple inches deep just to smooth it all out . Thanks ! Take care ...Randy

Wishful thinking, unless you've got some really flat ground and really nice gravel soil.

12' is about all you'd want to pull in my area with an M, and 16' with something like a 1755. Even so, the M will be moving much slower.

Guilty as charged ! I am a wishful thinker . But my little 6 acre field is pretty flat and the soil is pretty sandy . But all the other replies on this and other boards all have the same conclusion , I'd be disappointed . The thing is 18-20' disks are prevailent around here and good smaller disks are hard to come by at least in the places I seem to look . And if it is a good one it's also got a high price . I have a 12-1/2-13' krause disk but it needs a lot of bearings and that's a lot of work . Take care ...Randy

Randy: Look at it this way, 1.25 horsepower per 16" disk blade, 18" and 20" blades will require a bit more.

Your idea of buying a disk that you can pull wings up, with the M and wings down with your Oliver, while it sounds practical, I don't think I would pull it very much with wings up. Problem is your going to wear your main frame disks more than the disks on the wings. I thought of this years ago 20'disk, with 88 - 20" blades. It was over 100 hp job with wings down. I tried using 656 one day using center section only, just to do my garden. That turned out to be the first and last time. 20' disk is not an easy implement to hitch to, one may as well have it hitched to the larger tractor and ready, willing and able to drop the wings any time.

Hi Hugh , Can't pull it to much on only 6 acres and only after the hay thins out and I plow it up . I want something to help smooth out the mess I know I'll make while trying to teach myself how to plow . This disk is a " I want " not a " I need " implement . There's a oliver 263 at the auction tomorrow . I don't see many Oliver disks in this good of shape around here so I want it . I was looking for a IH 480 or similar . But I was curious as to if I could actually use a disk this size . It doesn't sound like it from most of the replies here and on the other boards I asked this question on . It might really be a moot point if the price goes over what I want to pay . I've been looking for a GOOD 480 for a number of months now and I'm noticing that the asking price of one of those has gone up about $250 since last fall . One thing I noticed about that oliver disk though is that it's built just like a early model Krause disk . Is the oliver a krause in disguise ? And AGCO/White is the Krause distributor around here . Take care ...Randy

Randy: On 6 acres it will really never matter if you put the wings down regardless of which tractor you use. I had a 20' Bush Hog disk with 20" blades behind my 1066 on duals. It would quite easily cover 100 acres per day.

Personally I'd go for the Oliver disk if the price is right. Pack the wings away until you have more land and more tractor. At that time you can buy disk blades to compensate for wear. My top paying price for IH and JD disks would be about 50% of scrap price.

Hi Hugh , Thanks ! I wasn't going to go for it but I didn't get any of the post hole diggers I wanted and hay elevators and balers where made of platinum today so when the bidding slowed up at about $250 I bid against the scrap buyer and got it for $300 . It turns out I measured it wrong . It's a 18' disk with 19" ( worn down 20" ) blades . The blades are worn but still in good shape otherwise , not all bent and broken like the ones on the 20 something foot JD that sold like it was packed full of gold . The thing was trash and still brought a $1000 . I think I got a good deal but the spike harrow I took to sell sold for $10 less than I paid for it . Oh well ! Maybe I have to come to terms with the fact that the things I want are just expensive . And if I think I know how much they are worth that I should add roughly 40% to that and I may be close to what things will sell for . Take care ...Randy

The two biggest factors are probably your soil type and blade spacing. Personally, around here, I wouldn't try to pull a 20' disk with a 1755, they only have around 85 hp, I'd want at least 100 hp, duals, and lots of weight, somthing like a 1066.
