I know I read it on here once upon a time, but cant find it now...
On my 1940 H narrow front... the upper end of the verticle shaft rubs against the underside of the metal plate that covers the steering sector gear. I think the fix was to make a bushing/spacer out of pipe in order to keep the shaft from riding up so high it rubs the cover. Anybody know the dimensions for this homemade bushing and where exactly is it placed in the lower to mid bolster? Some detailed directions would be appreciated. Thanks. e-mail is twobit@medinaec.com

twobit - I posted on that problem several years ago. I solved it by making up a spacer to go above the thrust bearing as you suggest.

Unfortunately I did not record the dimensions of the spacer. However the dimensions are not terribly critical.

Once you the pivot shaft disassembled it should be simple matter to determine a suitable spacer ID and OD. ID should be about .075 greater and OD .075 less than the thrust bearing. (Finished spacer should easily over the pivot shaft journal and freely into the bore in the fixed bolster casting)

The spacer thickness will be distance you want the sector gear to ride lower in the steering pot - the sector gear should be centered on the horizontal worm. You can be off by .100 or more and it will work fine.

Punch below for a few images of the overhaul on mine, including a shot of several different thickness spacers I turned.
