AFTER RUNING MY SUPER M ABOUT 2 MIN. I HAPPENED TO TOUCH THE COIL .IT WAS TOO HOT TO HOLD ON TO. IS THIS NORMAL? THINK ITS A 12 VOLT BUT MAYBY NOT.NO CUTDOWN FROM 12 TO 6 VOLT. COULD THIS BE CAUSE? POINTS ARE TRANSFERING METAL AND MOTOR NOT RUNING SO GOOD. HAVE ALL TUNE UP PARTS TO INSTALL. ON LAST MAINTIANCE JOB, I TOOK DIST., INCLUDING CAST EXTENSIN TO CAM GEAR OFF AS ONE UNIT. I THINK IN PUTTING IT BACK I MISSED GEAR MESH 1 TOOTH BECAUSE TIMING TO RUN GOOD HAS BEEN 1 INCH BEFORE TDC. IS THIS A PROBLEM? THANKS, SORRY FOR SO LONG A TOPIC . BUCK

Buck, I agree with Bob. I always tell people if a coil runs so hot you cant stand to keep your hand on it, it could be a bad coil or else its a 6 volt coil on a converted to 12 volt tractor. If the coil hasnt been damaged??? its probably cheaper to buy in in line series voltage dropping (12 to 6) Ballast Resistor to cure the problem versus a new full 12 volt rated (some call internally ballasted) coil. Similar, if the points are switching excess current both them and the condensor will have a shortened life.

The coil should get barely warm to the touch. Sounds like you've got a 6 volt coil running on 12 volts without a ballast resistor. Either add a resistor between the ign switch and the coil, or replace the coil with an interally ballasted "12 volt" coil.

You've done no harm installing the distrubutor gears 1 tooth out of time. If you time the spark either statically or with a timing light you merely end up with the distibutor body turned slightly from it's "normal" position.

John T, Bob M and all of you, I thank you for coming back so soon. When I bought tractor it was already changed to 12v., but alt. was not working, so I rebuilt completly. Ran real good for a yr. and started missing.It didn't have the ballast resistor so figured 12v coil . The hot coil and burning points said {I need some help}. I have a NAPA PART # 13 ICR, FOR BALLAST RESISTOR, CHRYSLER STYLE AND WILL SEE IF THEY HAVE ONE. THANKS AGAIN and Bob M for the timing gear info. I did use timing light on it. Been worrying about that difference all this time.

So you are saying they make a coil that will run on 6v or 12v?

To my understanding, a 6volt coil is to be operated on 6 volts. A 12v coil is one of two types, it is either designed to be used with a ballast resistor (from mid 60's chev, or chrysler), or designed to run on 12v without a resistor.

Look in the archives about 4 terminal solenoids if yours has a solenoid. Bypassing the resistor to make more starting fire.

A 6v coil on 12v needs the resistor.

a 12v coil that (usually) says on it "external resistor not needed" is to be used without a resistor.

A 12v coil that uses a resistor needs one.

Could you use a 12v needs a resistor coil on 6v (probably)

Jim, what can be yet more confusing are those coils labeled "12 volts for use with an external ballast" lol Those are in affect 6 volt coils. Another problem some farmers have is using "automotive coils" as some which require a ballast have an oddball primary resistance and used a similar oddball ballast and if the farmer uses a standard tractor ballast (1.5 to 1.85 ohms) the coil may not be running at its optimum current.
