I was talking to a friend this weekend about the possibility of boring out a set of shot F-20 sleeves to 4" and using M pistons in them. Has anyone done this or looked into this? I am wondering if the M piston pin height is close to the F-20, and how the thinner sleeves would hold up. Also, I am looking at the economics of the whole deal. Good sleeves are getting hard to find. I saw where there is a company in California making them, but at $200 each, that's too much for this project. I have an extra set of used 4" M flat top pistons I can use, and I was quoted $60 a hole for boring the sleeves. I guess I could sleeve the old sleeves after boring to reuse the F-20 pistons.

I did some research on this a while back. IIRC
JD 3010/4010 gas pistons were the closest in compression height and wrist pin diameter. When they put the 4" S&P set in an F-20, the bottom of the block had to be bored some. The stock sleeves get too thin by just boring them to 4". The JD
sleeves may work as well if the block is bored. Check with an engine parts supplier like TRW, federal mogul or clevite. They can give you all the dimentions.

Would these JD pistons work well in a bored F-20 sleeve? I really don't like the idea of modifying the block.

If you drive the tractor and hit one brake and then the other, you can find it. If you have a broken inner bearing the tractor will "lurch" and shake when you hit the brake for the broken axle. If it drives around and you can;t feel a thing when you brake, it's as they say, "old stuff". But I'd really try the jack and spin first. Get the tire going pretty good and hit the brake. If that inner bearing is all busted up, no way that axle isn't going to groan when you stop the weel quickly. I know this because I had to replace inner left on my SMTA.

Your best bet for pistons would be to find a set of F-20 4" overbores that would work in your
bored out sleeves. Contact Alderson Tractor in
Sigourney,IA. 641-624-2275. Hope this helps.
