I'm going to overhaul an H engine w/ an unknown serial #. There appears to be two different kits, w/ a serial # break the deciding factor. Other than differences in gas vs distillate heads, the only difference I can find is the crank journal sizes. Am I missing something, or is all I have to do is to mic the crank and order the kit for the serial block that has that size crank?

Yes you have quite a thing playing with the unknown. When you get a piston out you will be able to take measurements. The numbers on the inserts will tell if the crank has been changed and if it has been ground. If you can find a GOOD parts man at the counter he can be a big help.

There should be a flat machined pad on the magneto/distributor side of the block with a serial number stamped on it.

yeah, its there... not stamped though. This is not the original engine in the tractor, and its origin is unknown. It does have the correct casting # for an H block though. I have the tractor serial #, but since the engine is not original, it's pretty much meaningless.

if it's a H casting for the block, you use a sleeve and piston kit for a H, now if it has a late model crank, check the part numbers on the rod bearing inserts, that will tell you what crank you have. Late supers-350's had the bigger crank journals, better cam, and head. Look for a 8043DC or DD head casting, thats a good gasser head other than the better SH-350 heads. ChadS

Thats a pretty decent cyl head if its not cracked. of all the 8043 heads Ive seen, 1 out of 20 was cracked, so you may have some good luck finding a good casting. Im thinking the H overbore kit is 3-7/16 bore, You can run 300 pistons with no sleeves and have a 169ci motor,, thats a cheap power upgrade,,, good luck! ChadS
