Ok, I have heard some talk on here about 544's and 656's having 2 different Hyd flow delivery pumps. I am pretty sure mine has the lesser of the two judging by the wind burn I get out there moving snow. What I would like to know is..
1-How can I tell which one I have?
2-How hard is it to get a higher flow pump?
3.How hard is it gonna be to change it? Any good directions out there.
4-Is replacing it a waste of my time?

My memory, such as it is, as I suffer from the CRS syndrome (ask Mr. Boog) will try to answer the question. A 17 GPM pump is available. Put a flowrator on your remote to verify capacity. If the pump is the higher capacity (17 vs. 12) the cover on the hydraulic filter is noticeably thicker than the 12 GPM, this being to accomadate the thicker filter. On a 656 that I purchased used, the hyd filter was giving problems. After only a few hours, it was shredded in spots. Finally figured that it had the larger pump, and a flow test confirmed my diagnosis. The filter for the larger pump was too thick for my housing, being proud by approximately .75 (or so) inch. The cheap solution was to machine a new cover. Solved all my problems. When I bought the tractor, it had NO filter. I did not like the previous owner's solution....QR..There ya go..... .
