Farmall 656 Hydro Top speed?

Hey Yall,

Was wondering If anyone knew approximately the top speed of a Farmall 656 with Hydro? Rear tires are 15.5-38.

Also, assuming the Hydro is in good order with new fluid, would it be abusing the transmission to be driving for 4-8 hours straight at top speed?

Thanks,
Steve

Thanks for the replies; they are exactly what I wanted to hear. I forgot to mention that the tractor would be "unloaded". Figured that these tractors are meant to be used all day but just wanted to be sure..... ....Hydros are not cheap to repair!

18-25mph sounds great to me for roading as I was hoping it was more than 15.

Thanks for all the speedy replies,
Steve

I had a 656 Diesel Hydro with 15.5s on it and it would run about 25 mph

Heck no, not as long as you are not overloading the pulling capacity(plowing with an 8 bottom plow etc.) If you are just roading it with little or no load it will be fine.

Hi Steve,

Me thinks somewhere in the neighborhood of 20 mph.

Dunno, I think about the only way you can hurt 'em is to try to start the things by towing. That really tears the old darlin's up. :>(

Allan, y"know, I"ve been thinking about that since you were working on yours. What is the correct way to tow a Hydro tractor? Lets say, for instance, I find a Hydro tractor with a dead engine that I want to get to my place. How would I get it up on a trailer, or move it at all for that matter? Is there a "disconnect" somewhere? Or can you just throw the Hydro lever full ahead when pulling it ahead so the fluid can circulate freely, and not deadhead?

Hi Ol' Pard,

The High/Neutral/Low lever on the right side of the tractor completely disconnects 'er mechanically when in it's placed in neutral.

When it is cold outside, I throw 'er in neutral and put the range lever full ahead or reverse to warm up the oil and the tranny.

It's like you had a transfer case in neutral and the tranny in high gear. She's a spinnin' but just not goin' anywhere. :>)

There is no way to tow a dead HYDRO other than the few feet to load onto a truck, and that is with the range lever in neutral. Unless you have lots of unneeded $$$$$, which you could donate to me. OK????? ???....QR..

Don't be shy, and do not worry about the exchange rate - just send lots!!!!! And heck I will even accept good 'ole boy Confederate notes. These French bank tellers don't know diddlysh-t about Ben Franklins. All they know is how to (I can't say it here, but I think ya' know what I mean...) Actually, I think that that is the main reason that I live here....Yes, French women and Montreal night life. The best way to have a good time and part with your dollars. If you want, you could come and help me spend your contribution. Just be sure to get Allan's credit card number. (to post bond----- ya all know that those girls deal only in CASH!!!!! !!!!!).....
