I was in a consignment auction yard yesterday, saw what looked like a decent post 1963 Farmall 140 with cultivators and side dresser. It had a round non adjustable front axle, without measuring, I'd guess 44" wheel tread. Front axle looked good enough to be factory, plus it had the newer automotive type tyrods.

As per another thread back couple weeks ago, we discussed this very setup on an A. Over the years I've seen a few A's so equiped, but this is the first time I've ever seen a post Super A tractor with non adjustable front axle. Any comments?

Hugh,
I found a new tractor 1960 price list and there was a version of the F140 called a "tobacco special" This version had no pto, and the round tube non adjustable axle that you saw. That combination was very common in the Tillsonburg area where a lot of tobacco was grown. The solid axle worked for the row widths they used and was a few (very few) dollars cheaper than the adjustable version.

Don: Must have been a tight fisted bunch of tobacco growers around Tillsonburg. They also bought a lot of those tractors without drawbars, I doubt if they saved much on that either. This 140 tractor was down in Rutherford.

I'm originally from Nova Scotia, and down there dairy farmers bought a lot of these tractors. A lot of Super A's sold down there with 6' side mount mowers. I had seen the ocasional A with non adjustable front axle. All Super A, 100, 130 and 140 down there would have had adjustable front axle, PTO, belt pulley and drawbar or fast hitch.

In the early days we used them for mowing, then as tractors got larger and haybines came along, we kept the little offsets for raking and general chores. Great little tractor for going over fences in spring. You can sell a set of cultivators down there and let me assure you it is a sellers market. Probably less than 15% of offsets down there were sold new with cultivators. Now you can probably buy a side mount mower down there for $50. to $100. A lot of those mowers have gone for scrap.

I expect the fact that they were only a "very few" dollars cheaper is why there aren't more. I have only ever seen one Super A without PTO and belt pulley. That particular tractor is next door, owned since new by my Great-uncle. It does have adjustable axle though, as well as a heat indicator and radiator shutters, though it is not a distillate tractor.

I would need to check the book to be absolutely, positively, without a doubt sure, but I am "pretty sure" that the nonadjustable front axle was standard equipment on the Super A. So, it would make sense to continue to offer it on through the 140. That said, I have never seen one on any tractor, A-140, except in the parts book.

Adjustable was standard, non adjustable was option, heavy duty was also option. This went for Farmall A, SA, 100, 130, & 140.
