I recently purchased a 1950 M and was told that the motor was rebuilt with the super M liners and pistons. My question is what physical differences if any, are there between the m and super m? Any info would be appreciated.

Thanks Marcus

Thank you for all of the replies. I really appreciate the quick response. Now I can brag and say I have a SUPER M! Until some smart-a** corrects me!!

Original with thick sleeves, piston bore M 3-7/8, SM 4 inch. Replaced with thin wall sleeves,M 4 inch piston bore,SM 4-1/8 piston bore. Even though some call it a SM kit the sleeves or liners don't interchange between blocks.

Besides a larger engine, major differences are the Super M is geared differently (is faster in 3rd and 4th gears) and is equipped with disc brakes. The Super M also has a heavier timing gear train to accomodate a live hydraulic pump.

Stages of Super M production, first to last:
Stage 1 - transmission drive (belly pump) hydraulics
Stage 2 - engine drive (live) hydraulics
Stage 3 - live hydraulics + torque amplifier. This is the Super MTA.

The Super M was three stages. All had the bigger engine and disk brakes. Stage I still had the belly pump. Stage II had live hydraulics. Stage III was the SMTA and had live hydraulics, independent PTO and TA.

So is it possible to have super m pistons in a 248ci M motor? And is there any other diff. between them? Rearend, axles, transmission?

I've talked to a CASEIH mechanic who worked on many M overhausl in the 50's. He said they always put the super m sleves and pistons in a M overhaul after 52. Farmer lover the boost and it made him think the $ were well spent.
