I have the final drives off and i need to remove the axles. If i remove the set screw will the slide out? Ran out of steam and quit for the night.

Any recommendations for the bearings, seals? i know the outer left axle bearing is bad and need to check the final drive also. I'm not having any luck locating them online. Parts house here is a nightmare to get parts.

Now for the tranny, i have the diff out and need to pull the shafts. The rivet is already out of the reverse gear. Manual says to buck reverse gear and drive shaft out. What do they usually use to buck the gear with? I dont want to break anything or mess the bearing up.

I still have to pull the tranny and remove the flange and bearing retainer.

Thanks

it looks like the left will come apart easily but the right might be a chore. looks like it is rusted pretty tight. got some pb blaster on it now. still have to finish the tranny and then work on the final drives.

First off, if you don"t have one already, get a parts manual and a maint. manual. Invaluable information. Also, take plenty of pictures or notes. Helps when putting everything back together any you wind up wondering where that extra thingy went.

To remove the axels you will first need to remove the brake drums. Loosen the set screw and slide them off. They have a woodruff key. I personally had a devil of a time getting the drum off of the long axel. Wound up having a round steel plate made with threaded holes and some long threaded rod to make a puller. After much soaking, tighting and tapping on the top of the puller it finally came loose. Once the brake drums are off you should be able to slide the axel out of the housing. If the bearings are tight on the axel just tap them out with a hard rubber mallet.

When I rebuilt the transmission I removed the differential cage first. When you remove the bearing retainer for the differential keep all the shims separate and marked for which side they go on. Then remove the top front bearing cover and tap the spline shaft back though. The rear bearing may work out of its seat. Pretty much the same with the countershaft if I remember correctly. Good luck.

I have all the tranny apart now, just 1 question . Is the inside countershaft bearing a 2 peice?

bearing and race combo? cause mine came out in 2 peices. Actually the roller part is still in the tranny but a race came out with the shaft.but it is not tapered looks like a chrome bushing but thick. it is a bower bearing ( peice that is on shaft) MA 1207 is all the info i have right now.

the main shaft seal is 42177D MLP

axle bearing IH PL-240

are these correct?
