I want to replace rear main seal in 400 gas. Have seal and gaskets. It is 2 pieces. Do you have to take off plate that goes between engine and bell housing? Have bolts put, not enough room to get top 1/2 out and bottom 1/2 set on a ledge. Is that part of the oil pan? Could probably pry top out but bottom isn't going to. Surely someone has done this, is there something simple I'm missing or do you have to take more off to get to it? Also, The two locking straps for flywheel bolts need replaced and CIH dealer says they are not available anymore. Someplace to get them or make your own?? Thanks in advance, Chris

super99 If the retainers are warped where to two come together they will never hold. I thing the felt will go in the holder better with out oil then oil, oil first will make them swell and harder to push into the grove, and don"t cut any felt off.

Oil pan must come off.

Remove the pan

Remove the bolts from the seal retainer.

Remove the retainer.

Basically all you do is soak the seal halves in oil for a bit. I left mine over night. Then install them in the seal retainer. I over lapped mine to cover the area where the 2 halves come together. Then install the top half of the retainer and gasket. After that put the bottom half up to the top half (dont forget the little gaskets)and use the cap screws ( shown by arrow in photo) to draw the 2 halves together. This compresses the seal around the shaft. Then tighten the 2 bottom bolts on the retainer.

Done!!
