I have a Farmall H and the gears just started clanking when in neutral with the clutch engaged. What's the problem? What's the solution?

It may be a bearing coming apart. I think it is time to disassemble.

How about a little more in the way of a description ? What you mean by 'clank' ? Does it sound like a piece of pipe dropped on concrete ? Does it only make the noise in neutral ? Does it get louder / quieter in gear, disappear in 5th / reverse, etc. ?

If it were more of a crunching noise, it could be the pinion bearing in the main shaft.

Sounds to me like you left it partially in gear.I would try wiggling the shifter in different positions. Might be something more serious. Hope not.

When I hopped off the tractor and left it in neutral, I thought that it was left partiallly in gear but shifting through all the gears and back to neutral each time did not make the clunking sound go away. It is more of a heavy clunking sound, the sound is a slow clunk that seems to come with each revolution of the driveshaft and not like gears grinding. I'll take a chance and drive it some tomorrow to see how it sounds in all the gears.

The clunking noice seems to occur in reverse and in neutral. The other gears seem to be fine. Any ideas?
