my 240 will pop and miss at full throttle I thought I my have a burnt exhaust valve and did a compression check all cylinder were 110 to 113,new plugs and wires I pulled the distributer to see if the mechanical advance was frozen but all check out ok-- yes Ive adjusted the valves and it still misses at full throttle -and yes Ive cleaned the carb several times -seem to have good fuel flow --yet the darn thing still misses ANY suggestions would be helpful

Randy -- Just a wild guess:

You may have a partially sticking exhaust valve rather than a burned one. It would close fast enough for a good compression check and good low-speed engine operation, but not fast enough to seal properly at high speeds.

This is similar to Greg_Ky's suggestion.

When mine was popping and cutting out it was carbon in the cylinders due to previous owner lugging it around. I ran some upper cylinder lube threw it and blew the carbon out after awhile.

Couddn't see it till it was dark out and it was spitting pretty bad.

Loose carbon in the cylinders can do the same. The carbon heats up to a glow and fires the fuel before and after when it should. Spraying water into the carb while running will usually rid this problem. It is simple to try before going any further.

If all else fails check for a week or broken valve spring. I have seen it alot when I used to build race motors years ago.

There is a couple things also that may be the cause of this , points bounce due to a woren bushing in the dist points out of adjustment due to the lack of a dab of grease on the fiber tab on the points leaking intake incorrect timming all I H timming is set at full throttel and for full advance not having the correct dist. have seen alot of this . and unless it is spun on a dist. strob ya have know idea on just what it is doing could be a weak coil . weak cond. and just because it is new does not mean that it is good .

Hey TV, when you say "all I H timming is set at full throttel and for full advance" makes me think I've been going at the timing thing all wrong for my H. I'm a novice here so forgive me if I've got it wrong - to correctly time the H I should

1) warm up the tractor to operating temp
2) advance the throtle to full
3) set my timimg light to 15° advance (or whatever the correct advance is for an H)
4) adjust the distributor until the timing mark on the belt pulley and the front cover pointer are aligned.

is this correct?

Sounds like you still have carb problems and its running lean on you. If it has a main jet adjustment you need to open it up some if it doesn't you need to open the carb back up and clean it some more becuase you still have some junk in it

In addition to what Old said, the float level could be low causing lean miss. Or an intake manifold leak (less likely)

Wiggle your distributor shaft (not in and out) if you can detect any wiggle, it may be your problem. Rebuilding the bushigs, or a rebuilt unit.
