Looking at a 460U...has a mid-size crack in the outside of the block. Any idea what its worth, how much for a new block? I live in N.Y. area. Any help would be REALLY appreciated. Also any weak points to this tractor in general? It has the T/A and two remotes. Looks like it never saw a loader, but has seen some hard work. Thanks guys.

My expreience with my 460U has been pretty much a good one, except for I have found it to be expensive as far as maintaince (parts, etc.) and hard to work on. But it is a nice little agile tractor, very useful and great for my little small acre farm! I paid around $4800 for mine with all hydraulic loader, 3 point, some attachments, good tin but needs paint, burns no oil, no leaks, and has less than 1900 hours on it. But I will be selling it, I miss my 300 and will definately buy one when I find the one I want!

Gas or diesel? Either way, a good block from a salvage yard should be no more than $500. Tons of them around. If it"s a gas, the C-221 engine would have been original, but you can use a C-263, C-291, or C-301 block. D-236 is the original diesel, but you could use a D-282 or D-301 block. I"d recommend staying away from the 301 blocks, as they are sleevless. As long as you are replacing the block, you might as well do a full overhaul, which could cost upwards of $5000 for a diesel depending on how much machine shop and fuel system work it needs. I would highly recommend having any engine work done by somone who really knows IH engines, as these early six-cylinders can be touchy about a few things, like how the sleeves fit into the block.
