I recently purchased a 460 Hi-Utility which had been abused. The hydraulic and transmission oil looked just like milk. I went through the entire tractor, took it apart and cleaned the transmission, rear end and hydraulic system as best as I could. I did not take the power steering unit apart but did try to clean it as best as I could with cleaner and air. When I started it up the hydraulics worked just fine but in about an hour, the pump started to make a noise and the hydraulics quit. When I took the filter out, it was plugged with stringy,"snot" looking substance with a slightly reddish color. There must have been about a pint of the stuff around the filter. Has any body had this experience and if so what did they determine that stuff was? Thanks

Well that sounds like someone used RTV gorilla snot instead of the gskts and used way to much one should neve ever use that stuff on a modern tractor as it will find it's way to places that you don't want it to get to , there have been several times that i have had to tear a tractor all the way down and go thru all the hdy. system to get it out of stuck valves and orifaces . as it can and will get past the filter. like on the 06-6686 tractors as 95 % of the time people loose the square cut o/ring that goes behind the tin plate behind the filter and now not all the fluid goes thru the filter as it is getting sucked past the filter. and this des happen on the 460-660 because the filter has no real good seal on the filter to case. just that littel metal tube that fits into the hole now you can place a o/ring around that tube and it will help seal it to the case.

Richard, sounds like your tractor has a serious sinus infection! Seriously, it sounds like water mixed with trans fluid. It is nearly impossible to get all of that contaminated fluid out of there. You may have even had a little algae growing in there. Clean the gunk out replace the filter and fire the tractor up and let it run, hopefully you got it all.
