no still havent got running .thing about puzzling ,this was dads tractor can had hole in it was stuck got loose really easy, timing was fine when parked and checks okay, has plenty of compression, but does act like out of time, but i checked timeing, wires are, right, wire to start and gen and coil test alright.i guess im not smart enough to figure it out

You need to bring No1 piston up on the compression stroke to TDC. This is very important. Once you have it at TDC you need to look to see where the rotor is pointing. It should be No1 plug tower in the distributor. This will tell us if it has jumped time. Has the distributor been removed lately? Hal

have done that shows in time ,distributor hasnt been out since rebuild was running fine when parked and can on stack got hole in it .now the only thing it will do is pop out stack like it is out of time but ran up on #1 compression and rotor is where it should be that wat i cant figure it acts out of time but doesnt seem to be.and once in a while pops sparks back at coil instead of points.

That No2 step should've been Is there battery voltage at the points? Use a test lite or volt meter. Hal

You may need to soak or have it soaked in carburetor cleaner. Then put a carburetor kit in it. This unleaded gas is as bad or worse for gummy up a gas tank and carburetor than the leaded gas. It better to drain the gas from everything if the tractor isn't used that often. Briggs & Stratton have a fuel stabilizer that works well too to prevent that gummy buildup. Glad you have it running. Here's a trouble shooting procedure for ignition systems using conventional points. Hal

No Spark?/ First be sure distributor cap is Dry & Clean. This is for battery/ coil ignition systems.

1. Is there battery voltage at the coil? Use a test lite or volt meter.
2. Is there battery voltage at the coil? Use a test lite or volt meter.
3. Remove distributor cap, rotor & points cover, remove the coil wire from the cap and put it within 1/8-1/4" of a good ground.
4. With points closed & ignition switch on, snap the points open a few times & watch for spark at the coil wire end.
5. No spark: may have dirty or burnt points, bad condenser or a bad coil. Coil primary (battery voltage) wire to distributor from coil must be attached to the - negative terminal on the coil if the battery is - negative grounded.
You need to check to make sure your plug wires are in the correct firing order on the distr. cap.
This could be the problem with the popping sound
you get. Going CW your wires should be like this if rotor turns CW:

4----1
2----5
6----3

If it turns CCW should be like this:
1----4
5----2
3----6

When you have No1 piston on the compression stroke at TDC, both valves will closed on this cylinder. This is another way to check to see if the engine has jumped time. Hal

Have you checked the plug wires to make sure they're in the correct firing order? You need to see whether the rotor turns CW or CCW. Then
the plug wires should go in this firing order.
1-5-3-6-2-4 with No1 plug near the radiator. Most of these tractors the rotor rotates CW, but you need to make sure. Is this a 12 volt system using a ballast resistor between the ignition switch and the coil? The neg - post on the coil should go to the distributor if your battery is
negative grounded. Post back. Hal

Ok , now one thing that ya need to check out is the start side as i call it when you push the starter button it sends 12 volts to the coil that will be a wire from the (s) of the seleniod of the starter to the resistor stright to the coil and if this is not hooked up guess what NOSTART. Then like the rest have said ya got to be sure that you are on TDC , now first thing to do here is clean up the ft. balancer so you can read the timming marks . Now the bad part of all this is we don't know if this engine is still a 263 or it has been updated to a 291 as there is a differance on the total advance timming but this will have to be a gambel well get to that later . Now once to figure out that you are on # 1 TDC and you are 100% sure that you have the wires in the cap in the correct order and that they are a COPPER CORE and you have a good set of plugs set at .025 and points set at .020 and with throttel just cracked open a bit and the choke pulled and it has gas it will run even if the compression is a littel low . now if and when you get this running then i will tell ya on how to set the timming correctly. Like i tell others to bad your not in my back yard as it would not take me long to have it running .

When you press the starter button, the voltage will energize the s terminal causing the starter
drive to engage the ring gear. The other small terminal is hot all the time and it feeds your ignition switch and when the switch is on it should feed your coil. There should only be voltage on the s terminal when cranking or it will crank all the time. Hal

You correct , hey it's earlie and i did not sleep well but it is the other small termainal that goes hot when ya push the botton and shoots the 12 volts to the coil and it is only hot in the start mode. and the bad part is at the moment i have forgotten the wire color and that is not like me guess i am getting old to forget something that i should know by heart , if push come to shove i'll have run out to the farm and look since i rewired that one from stratch with the correct color wires from ft. to back i can tell ya that the start side is oranges and that one is the one that goes to the S and the wire to the hot post of the gen or battery side of either and alt or gen. is blue and field is yellow and hot wire to the coil is black , now i am going to have to drive out just to satsifie myself. darn and it is pouring out there.

Wait until you get to my age. I just turned 73
and I would like to know what happened to the last 50 years. They seemed to slide by so quick
and our daughter turns 52 in May. Hal

You need to bring No1 piston to TDC on the compression stroke. Remove No1 sparkplug and hold your thumb over the plug hole until you feel compression against your thumb. Then look for
notch on damper pulley and slowly keep cranking
until the notch is aligned with the pointer. Then remove distributor cap and look to see where the rotor is pointing. Should be at No1 plug tower. It's better to use a helper when doing this. Even though you have fire and fuel it may not be firing on the right stroke. You need to check your plug wires to see if they're in the right firing order. This depends on how your rotor rotates and they should go to the plugs in this firing order 1-5-3-6-2-4. Hal

Could it be that the distributor is installed incorrectly such that it is firing at the top of the exhaust stroke instead of the compression stroke?
