i have a 1940 farmall "a" ser# 40696 i am restoring.it was owned by the canadian navy until 1993 . so you can see it wasn't used much , over maintained and lots of paint.you know the saying if it moves salute it ,if it doesn't paint it .my question is about the magneto . it looks intact but it also has a coil mounted above it .it has been changed to 12v. should i change this back to a magneto ?
any input would be greatly appreciated .
thanks bud

Sounds like it has been converted to battery ignition and is using the points in magneto to fire coil. Have seen a lot of them set up this way. If this is way it is set up nothing in magneto but points and possibly condenser is being used. Have never seen one with external coil where magneto supplies spark but there are a lot of things I have not seen.

Sounds like the internal coil on the mag went bad, so it was replaced with an external one. I'd repair the mag, keep it original.
Here's the guy if you need a mag.

Is it a mag or a distributor? If it's a mag the 12 volts is only used for cranking the engine. The mag creates its own spark from the magnets passing past the coil. Hal
