Farmall 300 - Fifth Gear

I just finished replacing a couple of transmission gears in our Farmall "300". While putting the tractor back together and moving the gears by hand, I noticed that the fifth gear teeth just barely engaged into the transmission drive shaft. The gear actually hits on the lower counter shaft "constant mesh gear" and only engages about a 1/16 of an inch into the drive shaft. There is no doubt that if I finished putting the tractor back together it would NOT stay in fifth gear. My question is; is there a (optional) spacer that can be put in front of the bearing cage on the counter shaft assembly? When I tore the counter shaft apart to replace the gears there was no spacer. My I&T shop service manual shows what looks a spacer, but does not spell it out in the parts listing below. I see no other adjustment I can make and it appears to me that a 1/8 inch spacer in front of the counter shaft bearing cage would move the complete counter shaft forward and allow fifth gear to completely engage. I would appreciate your thoughts and feedback on my problem.

I would have to say that it is posibale that you have the lower counter shaft not assembaled correctly as the constant mesh gear should be real close to the case in the ft. and 5th should go on the input almost to the bottom of the cut , now they do not move as much as the rest of the gears do but it should go onmore the and 1/8 inch , now like mag man it has been a couple moons ago since i was in one but it should go on 1/4 to about a 1/2 inch now it will be close to the bottom gear but should not touch. So go back thru it and double check as ya got something screwed up.

I have not done a fifth gear in a long time but I have a few questions for you. #1 Is it not like the H where the fifth is a gear inside the 4th thus 4th 5th slider. #2 when you turn the wheels does it slide on farther you know like ingauge farther when it meshes better? #3 how about the shifter ball worn and not putting the rail all the way ahead? Remember these are just a few questions off the top of my head I am not sugesting becuase I really dont know. JON

Response to your questions"
#1 - Yes, fifth gear is inside of fourth gear. #2 No, it doesn't slide on farther when you turn the wheel. I can't because it hits on the lower counter shaft "constant mesh gear". #3 I don't believe the shifter ball is worn. I did put the deck plate on and even the shifter. Then shifted it into fifth gear, but experienced the same problem. The gear did not properly engage.
