Its actual serial number is 525, but it is a cotton picker, not a tractor. It is a McCormick 2-row 214A picker made around 1959-1960. I asked the folks at the IH Archives, and they were not positive, but they felt sure it is number 25. Anyone know where these were built? I hope to maybe get it running sometime. I doubt I will ever get it to pick cotton again, but it would look neat at shows. The engine is stuck, but it is fairly complete with just a little rust. The original decals are visible through the dealer's (bad) repaint. Now, if I can get it running and out of the barn....

John,

The IHC 214A and 220A were built 59, 60, and 61. The numbers started at 501 so 525 would be a 1959 model. All of the IHC pickers of that era were built in the Memphis Works.

Thanks Harold. I figured you would know for sure. I have seen some differences between mine and those shown in the owner's manuals. Any chance things were still in flux when mine was built?

John,

What kind of differences are you talking about? All I can think of is that yours might be a 214 that had the triclean added and flush oil system added rqather than being a 214A. If it is a 214A, about the only visable options that I can think of are wheel sizes, wide fork, mud shields, and basket extension.

Some of the things I can think of right now are that the water tank is different, but could have been a replacement, and the intake/exhaust manifold does not look like the photos. The engine has been changed, since it has an 'N' date code, but the block re-stamped part number is correct. Other little, subtle things make it look different. The serial tag does show 214A, and it does have the tri-clean stuff intact, along with the basket extender. I can send photos if you like.

All of the cotton pickers from that era were made at Memphis Works just North of Memphis, TN. I could be wrong though.
