I have a 350TA, gas, with 2 point fast hitch. If I leave the pto engaged she runs nice and quiet. If I pull the lever to disengage the pto she starts to whir and whine until I release the lever and let the pto spin. Whats happening and how much of a fix is there to the problem. Thanks for your input.

I agree with the others. Make sure it has fluid to the correct level.
Adjust the two screws according to manual or IT book.

I found that I had to adjust mine several times with using it in between adjustments and then it was good to go.

Thanks for the info. Bought 54 SMTA in fall 05, and have the exact symptoms. I'll look to this to fix, unless someone knows something special and different about SMTA.

Get and IT manual and do and adjustment just to make sure that everything is correct , BUT all them old PTO's make this noise so i realy don'tthink that you have a problem .

The PTO has both a clutch and a brake. With the handle forward (off) the clutch is off and the brake is on, with the handle back the reverse is true. If you're getting a whirr when the handle is forward, that means the clutch may not have completely disenguaged. On the top of the PTO housing, there's a cover over two screws that adjust the brake and clutch. How to make the adjustment is covered in the owners manual.
