Came across a slightly above average 400 with a WFE, FH, average sheet metal, power steering, and slightly better than average rubber. Supposedly it runs great and the "only" problem as it was related to me is that the t/a clutch was damaged in a way to cause it to "explode" in the tractor...long story...What i can see is that where the belt pulley drive goes (on Hs and Ms), there is a plate where it looks like something did in fact explode through the plate.I know it cant look good inside, and the only way to find out what exactly is wrong is to open it up. The kicker is they want $2000 as it sits and then whatever repairs it involves..It runs but is not mobile under its own power due to the clutch damage..Is this a good deal or just a boon doggle in waiting??? Any opinions would be helpful..As I say, not sure about the rest of the tractor...Supposedly everything else is "sound" but we all know that isnt always the case...

T/a clutch can be bought on eBay for not too much. I would shoot them 1500, as while as you got it that far down I would check the rollers on the T/A. If you get it repaired I think it would be a good tractor.

Long story nothing... I'm sure some yahoo pulled the TA while the tractor was going downhill, thinking it would slow the tractor down... When he noticed the tractor was in fact FREE WHEELING, he should've stomped on the brakes and slammed the TA ahead, but he paniced, did nothing, and went for a ride. Wheeeee eeeEEEEE E BLAM! There goes the T/A, right through the side of the tractor.

It sounds like you need to buy a good parts tractor and take the two and make one good one. Your TA housing may be cracked or totally wiped out inside yours depending on how bad it came apart and if the tractor was driven much after this happened. Sometimes you get lucky and it doesn't hurt the housing.
The only problem is that if you buy one for parts it may have a bad TA in it as well, then it will still cost you another $925.00 for a rebuilt TA and gaskets plus the core charge if yours is not rebuild-able and chances are its not. In addition to the labor if you hire that part out.

I am currently looking for a parts tractor. Where are you located? And are you willing to sell it? I might be interested in it.

Well the blowen T/A clutch is not that big of a deal but you will have to make a split at the bell housing and gain access thru there and it was cause by pulling the tractor to start a dead tractor and when they let the main clutch out they forgot that the T/A was in the low side and just let the handel go foward into high BTDT , and kerbang it was pices and extra parts time . But he wants way tomuch for it and it will grow a beard setting and moss on the north side of it . But if you could work him down then i would say that 1250 would be fair.
