Welp, one of the things about working around the farm is the unexpected incidents that one cannot forsee. This morning I was repairing a gate, one end had been damaged so I decided to cut the hinge pins off , turn the gate end for end and weld them to the good end thus making the gate workable. I was grinding the hinge off the end and after some time felt the heat from the grinder against my leg, I inspected the cut and continues down the other side of the hinge, then stopped, pulled up the glasses and looked down to see flames coming up my side from my coveralls, actually I had a pretty good fire going, by the time I grabbed my glove and beat out the flame I had a hole about 5 inches in cicumference in my coveralls and my work pants underneath had a hole the size of a silver dollar. I stopped at Rona on the way home..Coveralls $42.97,work pants $31.00...an expensive lesson on safety..I didn't think sparks from a grinder could light you up but these nylon, rayon/acrylic fabrics we have today tend to have a lower flash point, looks like it melted before it burned..anyway that's the last time I am going to make an ash of myself on the tractor line....Mike in Exeter Ontario

I work for a fuel distibution company. I am fortunate that my work coveralls are flame retardent, they come in handy for welding and such.

Was welding away on a trailer one day and smelling smoke from the sparks/slag hitting the ground. Feet got hot, pulled up my mask and I was standing in the middle of about a fifteen foot diameter grass fire that even caught the trailer tire on fire before I got it out... dumb.

You're right about the synthetics. At the paper mill where I work if someone wants to throw a 440 breaker he has to wear leather glove, kevlar sleeve, and no synthetic fabrics in clothing. Anything over 440 we have to get an E&I guy to dress out in flame proof suit and hood to do it.

$31.00 for work pants. I don't spend that on 2 pair of dress pants.

The worst I ever did was run a big piece of slag down inside a cast on my wrist. I stood there and gritted my teeth while I waited to see if it would start smoking. Nothing caught fire, but it was sore for a while, and then made the itching inside the cast even worse when it started to heal up.

I was welding a hitch under a friend's pickup. I was on my side and a piece of hot slag went down my ear, burning a hole in my eardrum. Hurt pretty bad. I never thought about it then but afterward I realized a person's ear is kind of shaped like a funnel. Now if I'm welding underneath anything I wear ear plugs. Live & learn

I don't think anybody that has worked with a welder or torch hasn't lit up more than once. Been there done that and always look around to see who was watching even though you know that you were the only one there. All you can do is cuss and laugh

A few days ago I was wearing an old Carhart coat I wear when changing diesel oil and greasing trucks. While changing oil in my snowblower, I noticed a weld that needed to be gouged out and re-done. I was in too much of a hurry to take off the tattered, oily coat, and grab my welding leathers. Suddenly, my arm felt WARM. No real harm done, thanks to my denim workshirt, but definitely time to put the coat fire out! I must have looked like a stunt man, hopping around in some goofy fire scene!

When I was about 22 I was at work in the welding shop where I worked and was arc gouging with about 400 amps. In case you dont know arc gouging is welding in reverse and you dont want to be in frount of it. Anyway I was working (under) a piece of heavy equipment sitting cross legged on a crip and some of that slag somehow got under the leather and burned me pretty good in the worst place imaginable. And I was getting married the next day. I wasnt pemanently damaged or anything, except my pride, but it did take some of the fun out of the honeymoon : )

Shoot I have done that so many times I don't even think about it anymore. Warning to any and all smokers, throw away your bic lighter and buy a zippo or that bic may/will kill you if you weld or grind much.
True story from back when I was in the navy. A guy was doing some cutting with a torch and he had a bic lighter in his pocket. A hot spark hit the bic and it blew up. When they found him he had a hole in his chest about as big as your fist. They said he never knew what hit him. Even since I have not owned a bic.

I lit my dad up with a welder one time, we were workin on one of my 4-H projects and we was weldin away on a steel table my grandpa made that we ground, I took a turn at it, he said somthin to me and I turned around and hit him square in the chest with the weldin rod, he was not happy. Then there was one 4th a July when we were camping and I had a big, long sparkaler above my head , had my stupid mouth open and a HUGE spark whet right into my mouth. HOT.

A coal burning power plant in IN was started for the first time. There were white hats with clipboards crawling around on stuff. One got up on the catwalk next to the armature, and leaned back against the railing. The railing was about 700F. His polyester pants and (nylon)Utrow stuck to his glutes across both cheaks 1.5" wide. That was a screemer.
The railing had turned into a one turn transformer, (shorted) and heated with about 500 amps flowing in it. What a person never expects.

I was welding a peice of tubing to an old peice of grader blade for a rear weight bar the one time i pulled the sm. Not thinking about wearing shorts and how shoes can act as a funnel for slag, i melted my sock to my ankle. It finally peeled off a month later. There was a few threads that didn"t melt that stuck out of the edge of the burn
