Can anyone definitively tell me what the compression readings should be on an "H"? Its reading a miserable 57 lbs +_ 2 on all cylinders. Yeah, it smokes and fouls plugs... I squirted in some heavy oil and checked again.. only came up 2 or 3 lbs.. guessing i've got bad valves/guides. It was originallly an all fuel tractor, but has had the engine replaced. I haven't cracked it open yet and don't know exactly what's in there. I would guess there are different specs for allfuel vs gasoline. If anyone has both, I'd sure like to have the info. Thanks.

Here are the results from my 40 H Distillate the day after I got her home. cold compression test
#1 80 spark plug gap 38 clogged black oiley
#2 70 spark plug gap 34 clogged black oiley
#3 65 spark plug gap 25 black sooty and dry
#4 80 spark plug gap 35 clogged black oiley

I am not sure what fixed it but here is what I have done.
New plugs, wires, points, cap and rotor, rebuilt carb and governer, exhaust. Adjusted the valves, and ONE of the most overlooked items, cleaned out the crankcase breather.
I put about 10 hard working hours on her then checked it the second time. They are all in the 75 to 80 range now. and she runs and works hard.

Good luck Ken B

that's a good point. this tractor has sat for many yrs, and may just have stuck rings... a little marvel mystery oil and a few hrs of work might do wonders...if I can keep the plugs from fouling so bad the tractor dies...NOW, if only it was dry enough to PLOW!

hmmm, perhaps you need to lash the valves again...

As low as that is, I'm going to say what you probably know.
Make sure the battery is fully charged(maybe even on boost when doing the cranking.
Have all the plugs out, not just one.
Make sure the choke and throttle are both wide open.
Test another gauge, or that gauge against a known pressure.
Good luck,
JimN

I think the rings are worn or cylinders or both.

I rebuilt mine with the distillate (low compression) head and step-head pistons. Before it was ever started I had 115psi. Now that it is finally getting to be broke-in I need to check it again.

When I rebuilt mine I got a nice 122. Anything over 115 is very good.

The first thing I'd check before ripping the engine apart is the valve clearances.

I agree, check the simple cheap stuff first. I'm surprised it even runs with it that low.
