We have a PTO driven pincor generator. we have it incase of a power outage so we can run the dairy farm. We have used my 1948 Farmall M on it and when the farm is needing alot of juice the ole M really snorts and works hard but always keeps the neadle on the gauge in the green so it putting out pleanty of power. i was just curious on what is the smallest tractor you farmall guys have used on generators.
thanks guys

Thanks Guys for all the input. I will take it all into concideration. I brought it up because My M is so easy to start when it is cold out side are two john deeres need to be plugged for a couple hours to get them warmed up and the 400 case is a tempermental lady in cold weather.

The best way to know the horsepower need for a generator is to calculate it.

A generator at best is 80% efficent, so divide the generator"s max (or surge) power rating by .8 to find the power needed at the input. Now convert the watts into HP by dividing it by 746 (746 watts = 1HP).

This should tell you the smallest tractor that you should use with the unit, to prevent any damage to the generator or attached equipment.

It takes 1.25hp to generate 1000 watts, that is with a generator don,t know about alternators. My generator is 27000 watts.Don,t have any idea what my total place load is.I use my M because of the govenor stability. When the well pump kicks on when the wife turns on the electric stove and the AC is on the M govenor will maintain 60cycles and keep the voltage in the green,The H and SH are to small, the 460 works great but the fuel costs will break you. For the Deere people, I hooked a G on it once and under load you could watch it fire in the incadesant light bulbs,

I've run the Farmall A on our PTO generator with no problems. I think it's a 28kw... Of course it wasn't under full load, but ran the household appliances and TV - had to watch cartoons...

It isn't reeally the size (KW) of the generator that determines the tractor power required, but the load you put on the generator.

if your worried about your M, go to a diesel engine tractor,it might sound crazy cause they're a pain to start but they're more fuel efficient and the torque of the diesel will keep it up to speed. i suggest at least a IH 400 diesel or larger, many newer tractors will work even better.

Depends on how big the generator is... If yours is making the old M snort, I'd guess it's probably in the 15KW range. Dad's got a 25KW, and he normally runs it with an 80HP Maxxum.

I have been told that you should have roughly 2 hp per KW of the generator. 3rd hand information for what it's worth.

out-put of the gen in KW will determine the hp needed to run
