I have the 300 tore down for overhaul. I thought it would be nice to free up the hand crank while i have the wide front off. That part was a piece of cake. The main rod that the handle connects to is brocken off at the bolt hole. (i assume this is where the handle bolts on) Will it be easier to weld a piece of solid stock back on or should i replace the whole mechinism while i have it apart. I still have to find a handle for this one Thanks Rick

Drill and ream an new hole just behind where the other one broke off, install a dowel pin. If I remember correctly, 5/16 diameter. Unless of course, you are looking for an original registration. A tip for you, make sure the tractor is out of gear before you try to start it. Don't ask me how I know. My bonehead son-in-law left it in gear.

Thanks Dave. I'm just looking to get the old girl back in good shape and think the crank would be nice to have working. I'm sure using it won't be near as much fun as cranking Grandpas used to be.lol

When you crank an old clunker several things can happen and only one of which is good. 1. it starts, 2. you have a heart attack, 3. you get your arm broken, 4. you get thrown 50 feet downrange, 5. you get blisters on your hands, 6. after working up a sweat you decide it's tune up time, 7. etc, etc.

R-cubed I am with you while I have never been hurt by cranking tractors I have seen people who have. If someone wants to hand crank tractors that is OK but as far as I am concerned that went out with the F models.

I cranked an H from the age of 12 up. Other than getting tired cranking, it was never a problem. The statements you make are a worse case exaggeration. I have never seen one kick back -- but then I knew how to crank one.

If you have never experienced kick-back you must not have any compression, or the spark retarded way to far!!!!!

ZERO kickback, good compression -- lot of myths about hand cranking, you just have to know what you are doing.

I have two hand crank tractors that my son and I pull. A 45 "M" and a 48 "U", both with mags. Get the right tune-up and they both start easily. The starters, generators and batteries were removed to save weight, about 100lbs each. Works for us.

I agree with CNK and Bencie. I have hand cranked many mag Farmals without problems.

But hand flippin a side flywheel on one of them green A"s. Well, you dont want to go there.
