Lining up a next winter project and want to know about reversing an H to make a loader tractor out of it. Can anybody out there get me up to speed on how to go about this? Thanks.

Not real sure how they did it, but up in the Sandhills used to see them that way all the time. If I understood right, they turned the ring gear over in the rearend. Just guessing, but Ron in Nebraska will have the answers for you, or atleast an idea on how it worked.

To tell ya the truth, the only reversed IH haysweeps I've ever seen personally in this immediate area are A/B/C's and F-20/Regulars, and newer tractors like our 340 that had a shuttle clutch. I learned something new here!

You flipped ring gear over to other side of pinion this part is easy BUT ring gear is now directly under shift lever. To move shift lever over to clear ring gear you have to have special deck top and shifter rails. The kit to do this was sold as reverse operation attachment. This is true for M I know from experience and I ASSUME this applies to H.

Must not be true. I've seen a couple that were reversed, don't know the exact details but the top deck and shift lever were common H items.

Some of the reversed H"s here in the Sandhills had the lever on the original side. The people that reversed the tractor used a spacer to lift the shifting rails over the ring gear. To do this they had to lengthen the forks out

Jim,

I can see where that will work. However, what do they do about the starter. Looks like if they raised/spaced the transmission top up high enough to clear the shift rails, the front of the transmission top would interfer with mounting the starter. Do they use a smaller starter or did they somehow cut/modify the transmission top so the front part (where the belt pulley mounts) stays down as original?

I guess I've only seen this done on H's. I don't know if they tried it on M's. I have a parts SM sweep tractor with a reverse cover kit on it.

It does take a reversable transmission top. It has places machined for both left hand and right hand shift rails and two holes in top for mounting shift lever on either left or right. From the outside it looks just like later regular transmission tops with a triangle plate bolted on the oposite side of the gear shift base which is held by three bolts. Remove the top, flip the differential, mount the reverse shift rails, mount gearshift in other hole and the tractor is reversed. Same top works H through 460 and same top works M thru 560.

Low drum cotton picker H will have reverse operation attachment. These will be very hard to find though I live in cotton country and have never seen H picker but some were made.
