My tractor buddy & I used to keep about a dozen hives of bees until disease and mites wiped us out about ten years ago. I told him a couple of weeks ago we needed to get back in the hobby, since we had the equipment and both of us really enjoyed fooling with the little boogers. We were going to get a few hives going next month when the season begins here in Central Alabama. Well, after a beautiful last couple of days in the high 60's, I guess the pheromones started flowing early, cause I spotted a swarm in a shrub right at eye level this afternoon. I couldn't let this free $50 worth of bees get away. After an hour or so of scrambling to rehab a hive and retrieve mouse-eaten protective clothing, we hived the swarm at dusk. And not a sting! Beekeeping is fascinating. Professional beekeepers tend to be stalwart citizens, because after a day's work at their trade, they have neither the time, money nor energy to cause any trouble (like most other agrarians). Any other beekeepers out there?

I worked with bees in/for an orchard. We had 15 yards to tend. The honey house had an eight frame extractor, and all the other stickie stuff. We were blowing the bees out of the supers with dry compressed air after smoking them down, it sure reduced the number transported, and made things very efficient. (we used the low pressure high volume blowguns).

My dad still keeps bees and hes going to be 85. Only 3 or 4 hives. He has to treat for mites and the honey has to come off during the hottest weather, but he doesn't have any arthritis. I think the most stings I counted on him is 36 or so.

Few years back, I was mowing our lawn. Looked over at a young magnolia tree, only planted the year before. It was bent almost double. When I investigated, found about a gallon or more of bees attached to the top twig of the tree. I called one of the local beekeepers here and it was fasinating to watch that operation. Those bees were very calm and in about 30 minutes, they were in a hive in the back of his pickup going to his house. He had protective equipment on when he started, but before long that came off and as far as I know not at sting.

Congratulations on your find. I remember when I was a kid a swarm of bees occupied a small bush in our yard at the farm. My mother was a practical woman who phoned a beekeepper who came and got them. He didn't use any gear but had a smoker, gathered them up and was off, appreciative of the call..good luck with the honey production...Mike in Exeter Ontario

Did it many many years ago till we we where moveing a hive and the hive broke open and I got stung over 150 times, ever since I have had to be careful about getting stung. 2 or 3 stings can now kill me so I had to give it up. I really liked doing it but can't any more.
