but if you turn the pump up on the 15, it'll have enough power to hop like a rabbit. Good duals and a basket of suitcase weights and it'll pull like a 4x4 they are so heavy in the rear, it's nothing to have the fronts in the air a good amount of the time, at least on our 1566. They are pretty much a heavy tillage/chopper/packing tractor, not enough gears in the higher speeds.

It does depend alot on what you are wanting to do. The 1086 is a 414 motor the other two are 436 so that is more than injection pump setting. The 1586 is a 12 speed tractor and the other two are 16 speed. The 10 will almost for sure have dual speed pto, the 14 could have dual speed and it is unlikely the 15 would have anything but the single speed 1000 rpm but not impossible. The 10 and 14 could have diff lock the 15 wont. For tillage work even with fewer speeds the 15 is a lot tougher tractor and a better choice. For many other jobs your choice will be more on condition of the tractor and not whether it is a 10 or 14 model. The late ones did have the closed center hydraulics and when they work they are fine but they do have some problems. Around here there are quite a few 1086's that really didnt do alot of hard work. Many hours planting and baleing type of work while alot of the 14's did more heavy work. The 15 was a built to pull and most had 20.8 tires and alot of weight. I am sure that you can find a nice one of any model if you arent in a big hurry. If you have any questions just post back and someone will be able to help you out. bill

The main difference between the 1086 and 1486 is the injection pump setting. Unfortunately, the extra horsepower of the 1486 is too much for the transmission design, so unless the previous owner(s) really babied the 1486, you're likely to have a major transmission problem looming on the horizon.

The 1586 has still more horsepower, another turn of the injection pump screw, but its transmission was designed to handle the additional power. Unfortunately, to fit heavier gears, they had to eliminate a gear, so you've only got 12 forward speeds, not 16.

So long as the 1086's pump wasn't turned way up, and assuming the tractors were used and abused to their full potential, the 1086 is probably going to be in the best condition internally.

My Dad's 1086 has been next to trouble free, and a nice size for a wide variety of chores.

1586 doesn't have enough gears and weird splits between gears, in my opinion. And I know of a few people who have had transmission/rearend trouble with 1486's.

Just my thoughts and experiences...

Have to agree about the gear selection on the 1586, dad had one of each and it was real hard to find a gear that really worked on the 1586. He traded an 856 for the 15 and always seemed to kick himself for it. kj

Myself i like the 10 and the 14 better gear selection and if ya need the power of anything bigger i would go with a 4X4 only problems are the usual clutch and T/A on the later ones the PFC hdy system can at times give ya fits.
