Hello I own a 1941 farmall h and it has been using oil and burning quite obviusly, but know it has started knocking in the engine. i was wondering if this is the valves and is it time for an overhaul. how critical of a problem is this. thanks

I agree it is probably time to over haul if the engine is knocking. A knock is usually a main or rod bearing going out, possibly a wrist pin on the piston, but if the knock is in the front of the motor i was told to check the water pump and cam gear before you tear to far into it as they will sometimes go out and make a knocking sound.

In my opinion it is time to save money by repairing the engine before it grenades and becomes scrap iron. If it is repaired now the crank might be able to be turned and made to be servicable for another 40 years. Letting it get real noisy is an expensive delayed maintenance program.
