Tractor ID help

My friend has a small Farmall with a wide front. It is offset to the left. When he bought it, they said it was an "A". We have looked all over for a tag for a serial number but have found none. Is the serial number or model number stamped somewhere on the tractor?
Thank you for any assistance.
John

Thanks for all the help.
The seat frames are both missing so that would explain why we can't find the tag.
I'm fairly certain that the front tires are 15" but will have to check that as well as check for a number on the left front of the engine.
Since I'm not real familiar with IH, how would we tell the difference between an A and a B, which I assume were both made with a wide front?
John

Yup, the guy that said to look under the seat is right, look under the left side of seat if you were sitting in the seat and you should see it, think the smaller ones were close to that spot.then some were on the right and left off the bell housing.

Look at tire size on the front.farmall cub will have 12in on it. Also if it is a cub falow the steering shaft down. Should be a tag where the shaft goes in gear box. The A will have 15in tires on it.

Most letter series tractors & many "F" series also have an engine serial # stamped on the block, on a flat spot in front of the area where the #1 plug goes into the head. If the block was changed out for a new one, the spot will probably not be stamped. Often they are hard to read, but by using a pencil and paper, you can sometimes get the number by rubbing the pencil over the paper on the flat spot. Be sure to clean all paint off clear down to the metal. On early models the engine # & tractor serial # are probably the same, later ones they are probably not. If all you can find is the engine #, it'll give you a # "close" to the serial #. You can also check the casting codes. (My $0.02 worth. jal-SD)

198717 is the serial number. That should be early '57.

If it's an A the numbers are under the seat right side seat frame support.
