My Super M does the EXACT SAME THING. I have the new bushings and a new top gear (it definately needed the top gear) and it improved, but is still bad. I wonder if it isn't that bearing... it's about all I have left. I'm going to have it looked at. I'm going to be doing a lot to my SM when I get my 2M-Hd off of it, I had a hood latch break and I'd like to fix that darn steering, especially as much over the road moving I do. If you find a miracle fix, PLEASE let me know!!! Until then I'll be inspecting bearings

Neale, at the end of the steering column, front of gear box is a cap that threads off, there is a bearing on the end of column, if this bearing has any play at all, it will make the steering shake bad at road speed. The bearing is expensive from IH, about 80 bucks, I got one from GMC dealer for around 15$. GMC TOPKICK gas engine pilot bearing in flywheel is same size just is a sealed bearing instead of open.

There are bushings in that steering post that probably have some severe wear on them. You can't feel it by pulling and pushing on the front end by hand, because the tractor weighs three tons.

Even if the tires aren't perfectly balanced, and even if they aren't exactly the same size, there has to be some slop in the steering for it to wobble that badly.

Don't discount the gears yet, either. Just because you can't wiggle them by hand doesn't mean there isn't movement up in the gearbox. Remember... THREE TONS vs your fingers... Which do you think can apply more force and find a wiggle?

Check your front tires...are they the same size? Next, check your wheel bearings, and lastly, check the balance on those wheels ! Good Luck ! Jim

Check the shaft that goes from the sterring wheel to universal joint just under the hood in front of the gas tank. I have driven many H's and M's and these will wear and become loose.
