I need to clarify some of what I said on my last post. I didn't mean to lead you to belive that they think the main sorce of this stuff is from the nearby farmer. Like some said it would take years to get into the water. Here are some more facts I have learned. The wells in question are 500'+ deep. There is more to it than just oil and antifreeze. Some of the stuff they have not identifide yet. One reason this man has come under invetigation is he drives a truck and hauls waste material and 5 or 6 years ago he got in hot water for dumping trailer loads of molasses in a sink hole on his place that turned up in creeks and wells. Now they think he "may have" dumped loads of whatever else in this same sink hole. Some of this I am learning from day to day. So it's not dumping on brush as I was first told. Not that I'm for that. But it sounds like maybe truck loads of whatever this crap is. He is no poor farmer. This guy is ruining the land for furture generations of farmers or anyone for that matter. Sorry I didn't have all the facts and I guess I still don't so I will keep you updated. Did not mean to mislead you all to think they are going after a farmer just trying to make a living. That's my fault for posting before I learned more detail. Part of me hopes it is a spill or something like that. It troubles me to think people would dump this kind of stuff on purpose just to increase their profit on hauling and disposing of the stuff. If that was the case poor ole boy nothing, somebody needs horse whipped.

Hi Paul, My late mother had a problem with her well water about 25 years ago. They noticed a problem with their skin itching and burning. She had the water tested and it contained benezene. She told the neighbors and they had their water tested too. All the wells tested for benzene. There were so many wells contaminated that they ran public water and sewage along the main road. Any homeowner could be hooked up, but the homeowner
had to pay for having the water and sewage connected to their homes if they wanted it. My mom was the first to hookup.

Just last year they had had a problem with wells in my county. The home owners were complaining of the water taste and they started
doing water testing. This is in a big subdivision
that have homes costing $1,000,00.00 and when the test results came back it was an additive in gasoline. I forget the name they only used letters I think it MSTB not sure if that's the right spelling. An Exon station in the area was the culprit and Exon closed the station.

I haven't seen much about this lately and I'm sure a lawsuit isn't far away since most of those homeowners are lawyers and doctors. Exon is furnishing bottled water to all homes.

My wife told me once about what her granddad said about 65 years ago. He said if we didn't take care of the earth we may be drinking our own urine some day. Hal

The compound is MTBE, and it is a compound found with other hydrocarbons in petroleum such as Benzene, toluene...etc..

However, MTBE does not float on top of the water such as Benzene. This is why ethonol is increasing in demand because it has replaced MTBE as an additive. This is being enforced in places like California where they have recently mandated the ethonol additive (or outlawed MTBE as an additve).

In Baltimore county they just lost 25,000 gallons of gasoline at a service station this past week.
I haven't heard anymore about wells yet. Hal

I share your concerns.

I work privately doing environmental regualtory compliance and see contaminated sites often. Typically, it is a business or large corperation who is responsible. Other times it is old military sites and sometime it is a single polluter.

As for the cleanup it really does depend on the contaimation type, especially in water.

If the wells are 500 feet deep and groundwater is the concern, this will be expensive and even more so if it has migrated through the soil and not dumped directly.

Also, depending on the type of contaimination it could very well be traceable to a person (if a single polluter.

Regardless, it sucks and dealing with it can be mentally draining quite often. If you have more specfics put them up I will help.

As for me I have some Farmall M brake band issues to work out :)

Situation is much worse -- but at least it's not caused by incidental or occasional dumping of crankcase oil etc -- which should also be avoided.

I agree, with all the alternatives of using or disposing of waste oil its only laziness or meanness that would make one dump it.
