White smoke is coolant or water (possible just condensation, given this time of year).

Oil smoke will be blue...

Hi Steve in Az,
Yea, that,s what it is alright,
At Idle, or just a bit more throttle,
When I get on it, then it turn,s to dark brown,
Maybe ring,s, or valve guide,s?
Kirk C,

Personally, if it runs good, has good oil pressure, and doesn't burn a lot of oil or get low on coolant I would run it as-is.

Check the radiator for bubbles while it is running. Bubbles = head gasket out or cracked head/block. If the oil gets milky white, you may also have a cracked block.

If oil consumption is less than a quart every 25 hours or so I would just use it. Remember, these never came with valve seals, so anything that can get past the guides will be burned.

Does it smoke at an idle or wide open, does it go away under load? dsoes it have good power? Also you may want to try some tranny fluid in the cylinders, Put some in each cylinder and let it sit for a couple of days. Andrew

Maybe your carburetor is in need of attention. IF the float is damaged, the fuel level will be too high & cause rich running more noticible at high RPM"s. IF the needle & seat (float control falve) is leaking it will be more noticible when the engine is shut off. IF the air cleaner is not free-flowing (winter = ice in oil cup or some blockage in air passage) the engine will run rich.
Try re-setting the high speed mixture screw with the engine warm, brakes locked, transmission in neutral; run at wide-open throttle and turn high speed screw (bottom of carb) in until engine begins to slow (lean) and turn out until engine begins to slow & smoke (rich). Now set the screw 1/2 way between too rich & too lean and add 1/2 turn out for power. With a heavy engine load plowing or such the screw can be turned out just a bit for a little more power. Also check ignition timing as late spark can cause similar problems. These older machines need additional adjustments from the operator to match the situation. No computers to do the job for us!!
