Hello everyone, I am new to the tractor thing and just bought a Farmall M. It is a 1950 for looking up the serial. I am looking for some good info sites so I can read up on it. I found a really nice H site but not sure how different they are. Also I would like to used the tractor around the small acreage 20 acres. I would like to put up my own hay also. I am looking at buying a swather instead of a rake and mower but what can I used for a baler? My uncle has a 14T JD and we also saw a 224 JD balerfrom someone else.

Another question is, does anyone know where to get a decent priced Live pump for this tractor. Any info on anything for this tractor would be great. Oh also looking for a 3pt. Looking forward to learning from everyone on this site. Thanks Again. Mark

It seems to run good. To me it seems like it should have a little more RPMS and also maybe the govener kicks in slow. Maybe that is teh way it should be. It slows down alot going up a hill in 5th gear, sorta chugs. Mine is missing the belly pump also I noticed. Is the belly pump the same as the LIft-All system that M come with sometimes? Also how much pressure does a PTO pump have compared to the belly pump to the live pump? Thanks for your help.

Mark

Mark , The M doesn't rev very high and mine slows some in 5th also going up a steep hill , so unless you know it's had a fresh rebuild it's just a old tractor that's a lot of fun to drive !

The "belly pump" is slang for the lift-all name . As far as I know from catalogs a pto pump will put out over 2000 psi and up to 12 gpm . the lift-all is lucky to put out 800 psi and I don't know the gpm but you can assume it's not very high and remember that it uses motor oil as hydraulic fluid . But it'll lift a implement cylinder and lower it just fine , it's a loader that might prove frustrating if it's all hydraulic . The live pump from a 400 fitted on the front of the engine is the way to go but not really worth the money since it'll cost around $1000 when alls said and done . It's cheaper in the long run to wait and find a running 400 or 450 because then ya get everything ya want or need . Have fun with it ! ...Randy

I think you will do fine with the M. We have two 806"s a 560 & a 300, (their all the farms) but I still bought a M (great price and its all mine) to move snow and mow with. It pulls a hay rake & 5 foot bush hog easy. JUST HAVE FUN

Thanks for the replies. As to why I would buy a M if I wanted live power and 3pt. Well I don't really need either at this moment. I bought the tractor because it was a good deal at $400. It has a wide front which we liked alot. Mainly bought it for moving snow around in the winter and anything else I decide to do with it. I bought a loader for it and have a PTO pump for that. Once you get something, then all of a sudden you see more things for it and think, ah that would be nice. Tractors around here seem to be going for over around $1000-1500 for the older ones and then if it is a 8N then they are $3000. Just my first tractor, I like it. I will do what I can with it.

Reality is going to settle in sooner rather than later...

There is no such thing as a "decent priced" hydraulic pump. Used pumps are a crap shoot, and are usually overpriced. Do you really want to risk $300 or more on an unknown quantity, especially since it can't be rebuilt? Even with reassurances from the seller that the pump is good, you never know. They could be lying, or just plain clueless. New pumps will run you at least $600.

The 3pt hitch is a little different. If you're patient, you can occasionally find a used hitch for a decent price. Since these hitches are just pieces of steel welded together, anyone with a welder could rebuild or repair anything that's wrong with a used hitch, so this kind of purchase is much safer.

Good luck with your new tractor, and even though reality isn't as rosy as what you imagined, this is still a fun way to spend lots of money :)

A brand new live hydraulic pump is available for around $675. A brand new three point will run close to $1,000. I can fix you up with either or both.
