Trash boards on the newer plows serve the same function as jointers used to.

ET: No, your completely wrong on that statmemt. There may well have been jointers bolted to the frame as you claimed in a earlier post but jointers were never intended to do anything other than cut the left sod corner off the furrow being turned and bury it. Jointers are only useful in sod plowing, the rest of the time off they come.

When it comes to trash like stover and straw, jointers got to come off as they only impeed the flow of this material. Yes manufacturers have tried to make trash cover blades, but the very best trash covering device is 4' chain hanging from your plow beam (one for each moldboard) and allowed to pull back under furrow. Even a 2x12 plow will plow down corn stalks using these chains.

John: I think two seperate and different items have got injected into your discussion thread. They also have two separate functions. The one mounted to the coulter is a jointer, designed for use in sod plowing. It takes a wedge shaped section of sod off the left top side of each furrow being rolled. This material falls to the bottom of furrow completely burried. This stops grass from springing up quite so quickly in the vallies of furrows on plowed land. My dad would have used these on early fall plowing, and would have removed them on late plowing as frost would kill the grass anyhow.

The other item mounted to the plow beam is designed for covering trash like stover, tall grass, etc. They are called trash plates and are designed to bury high standing trash.

Two different functions and two different attachments.

Hugh, I have an IH plow parts book that shows both coulter mounted jointers and frame mounted jointers available as option choices for the same plows. They do a nice job covering trash in the right conditions with proper ajustment but they sure do plug the plow other times.

Rusty, All jointers did not run on the coulters. Some did and then there were some that fastened to the plow beam on a long shank similar to the coulters. They looked like a small plow. They helped to cover any trash. Made for a nicer plowing job. Boyd

Welp, if RustyFarmall is correct I think we refered to them as "Skimmers". I restored my Dad's old Mc Cormick three furrow plow and had the "Skimmers" to put back on.....Mike in Exeter Ontario

I am not an expert, but the jointers run on the coulters, they are sort of a miniature plow bottom. Kind of gives a headstart to turning the furrow. I think they are especially useful in trashy conditions.
