Know this is OT, but most of the people on this site have at least one cow or chicken. Maybe a pet goat, horse, or some kind of bird. It affects everyone in the US.
The USDA has come up with a plan being implemented now, that will effectively put an end to private farms by 2009.
It is called the National Animal Identification System. [NAIS]
Implemented thru the Patroit act, this will mandate that all people owning livestock in America regester and tag their animals by 2009. [Even if it's only one animal or bird] Making in effect a National herd owned by the Federal Government. Follow the money and see who is in favor of this. IE the Large Agri-Business and of course the Tag manufacturers.
Already in force in some states, this sidesteps the whole Constitution.
If this can be done with the Patriot Act, WHAT else is in store for the American people?

I think you a more than a little paranoid. You will still have you own herd, but you"ll certainly be expected to management it better. This topic coming up on an "antique" discussion board reinforces the point that we"re not farming in 1950 anymore. Consumer"s determine the quality standards for the products they purchase, and if you choose not to meet those needs, you can keep your cows. If you want to blame a government try Japan, Canada, or the EU. The US government is only taking steps to insure that we produce a product that is safe and marketable to the rest of the world.

As far as the costs per animal, the tags are not $10 around here, TN. Small price to pay to gain the status of producing a value-added product.

Odd, how some know how much the fines are, when none have even been set yet! Don't believe all the conspiracy websites! Just relaxe, take deep breaths and let your blood pressure go down! LOL!

One parting thought. In Japan beef costs over $15 dollars a pound.
That price will soon be the same here.

Loyd, I would like to make this promise to you and God and everybody that reads this.

Loyd, if beef gets to $15.00 a pound here in the U.S. I for one, just for the sake of friendship and benevolence toward my fellow man, will not sell any of my cow critters for more than $14.00 per pound on the hoof. Orders will be taken on a first come first served basis, and they can start today to avoid the rush. Just send your emails and I will put you on the list. Thanks for your support, Harley

I don't suppose that cost would include you slowly herding them north (so as not to lose weight)to Canada? Rather than crossing the International Bridges, you could just swim them across the St Lawrence river, just like in the old days. You may even be able to stop at Hugh Mackays to graze (he wouldn't have to cut the grass) and fertilize before coming further up into the Valley. Make sure they suck up a lot of water crossing the river 'cause our water up here isn't really very good. Once you get here I may be able to sell you an old Farmall to drive back home. Whatta you think?

Yes,I have heard about this"nais" that our USDA has set.All I can say is,you had better read up on this new program. It is suppose to be because of the disease scare in the cows and chickens. In theory,it sounds good and necessary.BUT,are you ready for the government to tell you where you can or can't take your animals?? Are you ready to call some authoritative person you are taking your horse off your own property to a show or the vet ???The whole thing is another way for the government to controll the small farmers.Wish I could find my papers on this to tell you more but I can't find it for now.READ about this program and not sit idle.

Just remember that there are a lot of paranoid people out there that want to stir people up. We have been tagging and keeping track of our animals for 40 years through ear tags, ear notches, leg bands, and even implants. NAIS does not mean you will have to be "stickin' your chicken" with a tag that is readable by a satelitte. It is just a uniform standardization of programs that have been in place for years. If you read the fine print, you will find that if you are a grower-consumer (and don't sell the livestock into the food chain), then you won't have to comply.

This program will apply to every farmer or person who has an animal.Farmers will be given a farm number and you will be required to buy a chip with your farm number and the animal's number(registered or not). These chip cost around 10 dollars per animal and these chips are supposed to be able to be monitored from a satelite,if who ever is in charged wants to see where your animal is.If you take your animal out from your farm with out reporting it and they catch it,you can be fined. Also,if they catch your animal and it does not have the chip ,you can be fined 100 dollars a day untill you put a chip in that animal.IF?? it ever comes to that,it is had to say but it could happen and be legal.Call your congress person and get this stopped,or at least curbed to protect the small farmer.

And it includes all birds "exotic birds" like anything with feathers. I quote.

$10 annual premise ID and premise registration fee will be required for all homes where any animal ever exists, even if just visiting. Anyone found not reporting a baby chick hatching, movement or death will face a fine of $1,000 per day for non-compliance. Similar fines for all other forms of livestock were also enacted.

Just the paperwork will kill small farmers.

Yea, I heard of I it. Kinda ticks me off that they think that they can do that. I heard about it at the Cattlemen's banquet and he said it was going to be manditory by 09. Yeah maybe the should read the constitution one more time.

I live in the heart of feedlot country, yes they are big operators -- but what you are talking about is because of mad cow disease. Regardless of the very small chance that the disease will ever cause real (real, not perceived) problems in the US, I think that most of the people in this area are in favor of it. You can track the infected animal, and avoid having to destroy entire herds. There's more chance of even a small operator losing all he has now, than if that law gets on the books. My dog can already be traced to her place of birth -- through something called the American Kennel Club. You said animals, by bird, I suppose you meant a chicken or turkey. I like the Patriot act. the government can check me all they want, they will find nothing except 3 speeding tickets.

Those feedlots are the cause of mad cow diease. I don't grind up dead cows and feed them back to the living ones.
This is a case of the government being used to further the big agri businesses and the public has been pre conditioned to squat and pee at the menition of Terrorist.
How can the US food supply be safer in the hands of a few than spread out over the US.

Overreaction -- nothing like government "interference" to make people get up and holler. We have the best government in the world --- .

The reason we have the best government is because some people are willing to speak out when they smell a rat, instead of sitting back all comfy and saying, "go right ahead and peel another layer off the onion."
