Swinging drawbars

I've noticed a couple of websites that are offering brand new swinging drawbars for the H and the M tractors. Is there much demand for these? I have always just built up the worn spots with weld and ground it back smooth, but the prices they are asking doesn't seem too far out of line. Maybe I am wasting my time trying to repair a worn out drawbar?

I believe the intention of the reproductions is to replace drawbars that are missing completely, or are too badly worn or mangled to repair. If you've got a repairable original, that will always be better than a reproduction.

...and the original drawbars aren't exactly the strongest things, either. Dad bent the one on the M years ago, and ended up welding a heavy strap to the bottom to beef it up. The 400 he bought 3 years ago had the same thing done to its original drawbar. My Super H, purchased last year, also had the drawbar reinforced, but that one may not be original.

What were the original drawbars made out of. I heard somewhere that is what spring steel (hardened) I am going to take mine to a weld shop and see if they can weld it up for me but it would be nice to know if was a hardened metal or not.

I don't think that the drawbars are hardened. The holes get elongated and they get 'worn' on the sides. Try cutting the drawbar with a file.

OEM Tractor Parts makes their own, they give the dimensions in their catalog. They have had quality control problems with certain items, I am thinking battery boxes and serial plates. I bought a pressure radiator cap from them, the one with the handle, when closed the handle is at an angle, something that wouldn't be noticed with the other type. But, I think I would rather buy from them than someone who imports. For all I know OEM may make the drawbars you have seen.

Yes, I know OEM has them, but I have seen them on a couple of different sites. It is possible though that OEM is the maker.

Could be wrong but I thought many of those old swinging drawbar parts were forged.

I bought a new aftermarket drawbar for my H. It was only about 2/3 as thick as the original one. Now it is bent. Neighbor Marty welded up the original one for me. I'll probably have to let him plow this spring to pay him back...

Rusty, I will go Far and Wide to find something 50 years old or better to add to my " Stuff" around here. I recently realised I need a Peavy, Cant Hook. for my Business here. I looked at the new ones for roughly $100 . I put it in the back of my head and went about talking up the fact I was lookin for one . Well I found an Old Farmer who had several and he wanted $20 for one he brought out . I gladly paid him , and Im sure this will oitlast any new One I can ever buy. I needed a Top Link also, and went back to the Same Farmer for a Visit . He told me The Old ones are more expensive than he can get a New One for. I fully understand why. I have become Very Good Friends with that Farmer and we go to Farm Equipment Auctions together a lot during the year. Its amazing how you can really get a good solid Tool or Attachment for a good price . It pays to look the stuff over well, and to have a Teacher like him to Teach you what the Tractor is trying to tell you. I enjoy lookin over equipment now and seeing what its tryin to tell me . I wanted an old air tank to mount to my Trailer for holding AIR for Tractor Pulling. I found a sweet one at an auction . Full upright Compressor 80 gallon Tank and said right on it DONT RUN . I smiled and Bought the whole works for $18.Now where can you get a solid 80 gallon Steel Tank with Hubs and Pressure releif valve Welded to it for under $20 Bucks ?

Chuck ...

Lumbrjakman, I understand fully what you are saying and I do my best to take something that is considered to be junk and make it useable again, but sooner or later that old, original stuff just isn't going to be available to us at any price, so we need to start looking at the reproduction stuff, and decide what maker is doing a good job, and which ones are just riding the waves for a quick buck. I believe that quality reproduction parts are being made, we just need to learn who is making it.

Rusty, Good Point!! It drives me crazy when I get something and its crap.I am Restoring a 1953 Super M . I went to Lowes ( like Home Depot ) to get a Right angle die grinder for the tool box. I got one for $40 . It Lasted 45 Minutes before it Lost all its balls. I was NOT Crowding it either . I called a Buddy of mine and told him to have the Snap On guy leave me one when he came in on Tuesday. I got probably 12 Hours on The Snap On Die Grinder and its Loving doing the Job. Only cost me $98 for the Snap On one. I see it all day long in the Material I get . And you are correct, there are some Manufacturers out there that are trying to make a good product. I will tell my Buddies the good and the bad of any New Stuff I get.

I have noticed that there is a difference between origional drawbars and aftermarket ones. The origional are rounded on the sides and the aftermarket are flat. I was told that that is how the steel was rolled back then (round on the sides) and that they don't do it any more. Kind of the same thing in I beams. I was lucky to find a NOS swinging drawbar and strap for a Farmall H last year and am still looking for the U shaped part.

John, I am not sure that the U shaped part was ever original equipment. It doesn't show up in any of my parts books, but maybe my books were printed before that part was added.

Maybe I didn't describe it properly. The part I need is U or horse shoe shaped drawbar # 43684DB. Thanks.
