The hand crank on my Super M is froze up. I have greezed the thing and soaked it with penetrating oil and I still cant get it to budge. It wont rotate or slide in or out. Am I going about this right or do I need a bigger hammer?

All you guys complaining about being bit by the crank...stand upright, head back, and pull up! Pushing down on it is how you get hurt. So what if it kicks back on the pull up, it just swings away from you then. With the proper technique, safety is not an issue. We gotta quit pickin' on the magneto guys. :)

Nearly ALL US built tractors imported in to the UK from 1939 to 1949 were hand crank starting. If the magneto is timed up right they should not kick back on the handle. MJ

I used to use WD-40 and all kinds of other penetrating oils with varying degrees of success, until last summer. I found something that hasn't failed me yet on loosening rusted parts. Go down to your local NAPA store and get several spray cans of CRC carburator cleaner. Put the long tube nozzle on the can and keep spraying it on the parts, maybe four to six times a day, sometimes it takes a few minutes or maybe a couple of days, depending on what is rusted. It hasn't failed me yet and I have tried it on some nasty stuff.

I have the same problem with my H. It is stuck part way in, the fan belt is broke and there aint enough room to get the new belt on. I'm planning I have been soaking it periodically with PB blaster for years now. I'm planning on pulling the radiator and putting a little heat to it. I don't want to put heat that close to the radiator.

I removed the upper bolster on my Super H and disassembled then put it back together. That was part of my restoration process, don't think I would have done it just for the crank. I cranked tractors for years as a kid on the farm -- never a problem, you just have to know what you are doing. I still do occasionally, as you can start a distributer equipped tractor with a "dead" battery, as long as it has enough left to produce a fair spark. With low batteries, most of the current goes to turn the starter. I would never give up a crank.

I am with the tractor vet. I go back to the days ot the F12, F20 and F30 and have heard of a lot of lost skin and broken bones from hand cranking tractors.

My crank was all froze like yours, and after many attempts, lots of grease, some pounding, some cursing, some more cursing, and luck, it now works real smooth --- or maybe all the exercise got me stronger.

Sounds like a clear cut case if lack of use just like the one on my S/MTA and mine can stay that way i already have one scar from hand cranking and engine the guy that or guys before you must have kept a good battery and starter in it . About the first time one of them old girls kicks back on ya and beats ya half to death with the crank you will do like i did with the crank . BTW if anybody needs a crank for and OC 3 Oliver it is in the back lake at my uncles old farm about 30 feet down you are more then welcome to it but i would like to have my hide back.

Heating, the shaft only, up repeatedly (not so as to make it glow)
will break up the rust. Try to move it only when it is cool. JimN

While I had the front end removed on my 400 I took a chance and beat it silly with a hammer. When it moved a little bit I hosed it down with penatrating oil. It loosen up just fine. I put a block of wood over it to prevent damage to the recepatcle and hoped for the best. With yours on the tractor it will be important to be sure that it loosens up before it engages the crank pulley. You may want to try to have someone rotate it a pipe wrench while you try to drive it in toward the pulley. How much gap you have to begin with will give an idea of how brave you may want to be. With mine I had nothing to lose but I am glad I did it. Good luck
