I have been following the forum on painting and safty. I have seen several references to various paint numbers. I am looking for the correct color red for a 47 Farmall M, and where to find it. I want to get a rusty drawbar painted prior to mounting. Thanks

If you want the correct color that is IH 50, not 2150, although 2150 is close. If you want good paint don't use Van Sickle, Tractor Supply's or whatever, it will fade, although if all you want is to paint a drawbar, it does not matter. Your new paint will not match what is on the tractor anyway. Back to my first sentence: IH 50 is not sold premixed, it crosses to PPG 70019 or DuPont 7410. If you want the best premixed paint you can buy, and it does not have to be absolutely exact, get IH 2150 from your Case-IH dealer. Just remember the drawbar will then be the shinest part on your tractor -- may make you want to paint the whole thing.

It may depend on which farm store you get your paint. I use Van Sickle. I have provided both Reds to my "Paint Man" and we cannot tell the difference betweem Case-IH "Red Rouge" and Van Sickle's "Case-IH Red." These two Reds are identical. Other farm-store reds may be different, but Van Sickle's is the same. In adition, Van Sickle makes an excellent IHC gray upon request.

Van Sickle advertises their paint something to the effect of the "best OEM type paint you can buy for older tractors". That might even be true. However it is Alkyd enamel, indeed it is very similar to the paint used in 1937, that is the year IH started using IH 50 -- that is not very good paint. Alkyd enamel will fade. You either have to keep the tractor inside all the time or keep it waxed. I remember waxing 50's cars -- due to my desire for a high shine (I did get the shine, it just didn't last long), one car's paint went to the primer. Something to keep in mind if you use the tractor and want to keep it looking good for a long period of time. There are better paints out there. Anyway what's the difference between $20 Van Sickle, and $45 Case IH. For $25 more you get more or less "quality" paint that will last several years. I usually spend in excess of $300 for PPG, including primers, etc -- but I'm only going to do it once. Also, since I'm retired, it's my hobby, I like spending the money better than going to the coffee shop and listening to the other old geezers gripes, and saving $300/tractor.

Case-IH 2150 Red rouge. It is available in spray cans, quarts, or gallons. Slightly more costly than farm store paint, but not much. The farm store IH red IS NOT the correct shade of red. It is much darker.

I will agree about the color of the farm store paint. Most repainted tractors I have seen for sale around here are, IMO, too dark. I made a big effort to match PPG's acrylic urethane to Case IH 2150 and came to the conclusion that 2150 and PPG 71310 are almost identical in color. I originally thought that PPG's was too orange. But, I do not know what the "for sale" tractors were painted with, I'm sure it wasn't 2150. I wish I could remember what the older Farmalls looked like new. I am beginning to think the dark red that people remember on the older tractors is a myth.

Thanks to all those who responded to the paint question. It was helpful. I bought a 47 M last spring. It was put together out of two tractors, the front half has oxidized into a orange and the rear half has oxidized into a pink shade. It desperately needs a paint job, but that is down the road a little ways. Thanks again. Ron

It is simply called IH Red. any IH dealer carries it along with most Farm and Ranch stores.
