First does anyone know how many M lp"s they made?
My serial # is 33974 which is shown as a 1941, but it has the later style PTO(not the stubby shaft) and it has the later front wheels. I live in PA and I"ve never seen one around here, are they rare? I paid $450 for this today, I"m sure I made a good buy on it. Also I want to make this my pulling tractor, This is a good start right? Thanks for any help

A M on LP is a field conversion. IHC did not offer LPG untill the Super M. You say it has "later" front wheels. Both adjustable and non adjustable front wheels were available throuout the M production run. Are you calling pressed steel wheels like on a 560 later wheels? Pto can be changed from 1 1/8 to 1 3/8 which has been done on many early M's.

I have a 1940 M with the late style PTO. At the time these tractors were built, the PTO was an option. It is entirely possible that your M was delivered without the pto, and later on the owner decided he wanted that option, or, the pto might have been changed out at some point for the late style to make the tractor more adaptable.

according to my book by Ken Updike the Super M was avalible with an LP engine but nothing under the M, like Andrew said there were after market kits for them thou. for a pulling tractor you would be better off putting a gasoline tank off another M and converting it back to gas, keep the LP manifold and put a gas carburator on depending what was done with the head when converted a lp head is VERY NICE to have for a pulling rig, a gas M with a lp manifold and head is the way to go. Eather way what you paid for it, if it is in any kind of shape runnig it was worth it, get the casting number off the top of the head and post back that will tell me what head you got there. Justin

MJF, IH didn't start putting LP on Ms till the Stage I Supers in 1952. Sorry Andrew for the correctiom Go to Guy Fay letter series book for reference.
The tank setup was the crosswise tank, steering rod went through the tank, not over it. The valves all face rearward.
Your M is a 1941 model, not particulary rare. But since you are building a pulling tractor out of it you will probably be doing lots of changes and modification to is so that is ok, You didn't say if it was running or not, judging from the price ti is not, probably stuck. You have got your work cut out for you. $450 is at least scrap price.
Hope this helps.
Later,
John A.

No M LPs were made only gas or desiel. you got an aftermarket kit that converted it to LPG. The first Lps from factory were avaible with the hundered series I think. Andrew
