Gonna learn about brakes

The brakes on my M (49) are probable shot.

The left one doesn't stop and the right one is grabing and stoping the tractor but not very well.

I haven't changed them before and I was wondering if anyone could tell me what to look for before I tear into it, after I know what needs replaced....I'll be wondering how long it takes to fix'em and what kind of cost I am looking at.

Thank you in advance

Your brakes have a turnbuckles to adjust with. If they are adjusted as tight as you can get them and still won't lock the wheels, you need new bands. You also need at least an Operator's manual that gives specific adjustment on how to adjust them. Cost -- good bands, about $100??, haven't bought any lately.

So in another recent post there was talk about the bands being to long from the after market places, is this true with bands ordered from CASE/IH?

The bands might not be too long, but the drum is probably a little bit smaller than it was when it was new. On my C I had trouble getting new aftermarket bands adjusted tightly enough, so I moved the outside lever up one spline on the shaft. It worked real well until the band broke from being bent around the shaft. Another possibility is that the aftermarket got a little cheap on materials, and used slightly thinner linings. Back when there was still a local brake shop, I used to get thicker linings put in my bands to make up for the wear on the drums.

They're very simple. Under the cover is a drum, a band, and probably a toggle that connects the ends of the band together if it's anything like a Cub.

The bands are either shot, or glazed over. New bands can be had on Ebay, same as the reproductions you'll get at a CaseIH dealer.

Question??? in reply to fisherman, 02-24-2006 08:18:00
Would this be a much similar setup as the Farmall H? The left break is shot and only the right gives breaking control.

Andy, It would be the same as a H if it has the band brakes. If it is a super H with disc brakes I know nothing about those as I have never owned a tractor with them. Brad

It should not take to long to do. Remove the brake covers and then remove the bands. These are replaceable and as Rusty said about $45 a piece. If you don't have a manual for it already it would be a good investment. I believe it describes how to do it in there.

I have a shop manual. Do I need something other than this?

I have an I&T shop manual but it is with my MD about 100 Miles from me at this minute. I remember reading in there about removing and replacing (R&R) the brake bands. Look under brakes for a non-super series H or M. Brad
