Hello,
A couple weeks ago I was on here regarding a sticking starter on and a brand new ring gear on a Farmall 656. Just wanted to report that I found the problem. Turns out that the drive was the wrong one for the starter. Probably had been for years. In the end I had the rebuilder man order the exact drive for the casing # on the starter and that solved it. It was still a 9 tooth counter clockwise gear, but it was slightly longer. Probably could have gotten away with flipping the old flywheel after all. The new one didn't have a beveled tooth and could be used in either direction.
Sure thank you all for the help. I guess I learned to make sure to order the exact drive for the starter #, when ever there is a question. Thanks YC

Thanks for keeping us in the loop.
I think I was one of the ones who indicated that it needed a drive. Things that work inside a dark hole are often most difficult to repair.
