I BOUGHT A OLD CUB FROM A FRIEND THAT HAD IT FOR TWO YEAR. IT'S GOT A 12V BATTERY IN IT WITH NEG GROUND AND A GENERATOR. MY QUESTION IS,[ CAN THIS BE A 12V STARTER AND HOW DO YOU TELL THE DIFFERNCE IN A 6V AND 12 V STARTER ? ] I GOT ANOTHER STARTER THAT I TOOK OFF OF ANOTHER CUB PUT IT ON IT AND WHEN I TRIED TO HOOK UP A SMALL JUMPER WIRE TO THE STARTER POST THAT THEY HAD RUN TO THE SWITCH I GOT SOME SPARK ON IT SO I SWICHED THE BATTERY AROUND TO POSTIVE GROUND AND IT WORKED FINE. I ASUME THAT THE STARTER WILL WORK BOTH WAYS. THANKS FLOPGUNS

Can you put this starter in the tractor and hook it up to 6 volts, you may find out that way, been too many years since I had one apart to tell you for sure what to look at, but would think a 12 volt one on 6 volts would barely turn the engine

I don't know if it holds true for all starters but some that I have worked on years ago the 6 volt ones had two field windings and 12 volt starters had four field windings. Mark:

YOU DO NOT NEED A 12V STARTER THE 6V STARTER WILL WORK FINE JUST DONT CRANK AND CRANK AND CRANK AND CRANK IF THE ENGINE WONT START FIGURE OUT WHATS WRONG AND FIX IT IF THE STARTER IS WORKING DONT MESS WITH IT

The starter really doesn't care about the polarity, but what ever is charging the battery might have a problem with it, I just use the 6 volt starters on the old stuff just in case I ever decide to switch them back to original, have 2 Farmall's that have 6 volt starters that have run on 12 volts for over 20 years, just don't run the starter very long or you will over heat it, if everything is right, they start real fast..

There was a 12 volt starter. I think it was a bit bigger diameter than the 6, but not sure about that. The part number on the original tag would be the best guide.
