What is the reason for the adjustable section in the middle of the distributer drive? Looks like you can loosen 2 bolts and pivot it in and out about an inch. I need to replace the seal there and don"t want any surprises.

The slot is for timing MAGNETO the clamp is for timing distributor if tractor is equiped with distributor the slot had no purpose.

Are you talking about the slots that allow you to adjust the timing?

No, that's not what he's talking about. There's no slot there, and it doesn't "pivot in and out." The distributor is held by two clamps IIRC, and it rotates around its center.

What he's probably talking about is either the distributor-drive hydraulic pump, or the dummy spacer/shaft that otherwise fits in between the front cover and the distributor. One of the bolt holes is a slot for some reason.

Rest assured, the distributor spacer or hydraulic pump only fits in there in one position. At least, that's my experience with them.
