Farmal A Starting

I have a 47 A with 6 volt system. The starter barely turns the engine no matter how charged the battery. If the battery is fully charged the engine will start once, run fine until it stops then won't start again. Then I have to recharge the battery. I know I need to deal with the charging issue, but I'm wondering if there is any reason other than a bad starter that it turns so slow. Also, when attempting to restart the positive battery cable to the ground gets so hot it actually begins to smoke.

If you have:
all clean connections that are tight
suitable and recommended wiring size for 6 volts
a charged battery
a good clean starter
a properly wired and working charging system

your farmall A 6-volt starting system will work fine.

Take one of these away and you will start to have problems.

Check the starter switch itself for a grounded [short] condition. We had a switch on the A which burned a hole in the metal case once. Worth looking at.

Sounds like a grounded condition in the starter itself. If all else fails, pull the starter & disassemble it. Check for shorted or "grounded" field conductors & check the armature for grounded windings. Also check the "hot" connecting bolt where it goes through the starter case. Don't overlook brushes & brush leads.

The one that gets hot is a bad cable. You could use the flat mesh type for ground. NAPA can get you a 1ga cable. You mite also take that cable off and clean both ends but chances are the cable is bad.

I had the same problem with the previous cable which was too small (the person I bought it from put 12 volt car batter cables on it before he sold it)which I replace with an 00 size cable from Napa. I'm thinking at this point I will work the connection angle some first, and see where that takes me, but this is helpful from the standpoint of potentially not having to replace the starter. Randy

You need 00 battery cables due to the amperage draw and clean connections too. Hal
PS: A fully charged battery too.

First off check all connections,(battery, frame, and starter). Check voltage at battery and starter terminal, should be within .5 volt(1/2 volt). I don't know how long you crank it trying to restart, but if the pos. cable has been smoking it probably has corosion or broken wires inside, checking voltage drop will tell you. Good luck.

Cable is new and large enough for the six volt system. Sounds like next step is check the connection at the ground and other locations. I'll check the voltage while I'm at it. Randy

The heating of the (+) (ground) cable indicates a poor connection where it's heating, or a cable that's too small to carry the required current.
