Fellers,
I just bought a '52 Super A..haven't even picked it up yet..but the seller says it leaks hydraulic fluid/oil a little and I assume this is at the lift. How much of a job is to fix this? While I've got your attention..is there any worry spots in particular to look/watch for on the SA?

If the leak is external at the reservoir, and not the pump, you need a kit for that -- considerably more work. You might as well remove it, clean it, and use all the seals/gaskets in the kit. Rebuilding that unit will likely improve the performance of the raising and lowering also.

I just went through putting a seal kit in my super c as it was loosing hydrolic fluid into the crankcase. Just went to my IH dealer with the model # of the pump stamped in the casing and they hooked me right up with a kit w/instructions. It was an easy fix.

trickster,

thanks, just what I was hoping to hear! I haven't even went after the tractor yet, but the seller told me the hydraulics were leaking and needed seals. I hope that is all it needs...life rarely is that kind to me, but every once in a while, even a blind hog finds an acorn!

Mark: One thing you will have to watch closely until you get that hydraulic leak fixed is the hydraulic oil level. These little tracors don't have a very large hydraulic oil resovoir, and if if leaks dry it can get quite expensive. In case you don't have a manual yet, the hydraulic resovoir is just in front of the battery. The fill plug on the left is also the fill to level. Always fill it with the hydraulic rockshafts in rear position.

If you want all the liquids, type and capacities send me an e mail. If you have a manual, pay close attention to lubrication of fan hub and the distributor drive. These two items tend to get neglected on Super A tractors. If you don't have a manual, make haste and get one. Binder Books sell excellent reprints.

Hugh,

Bless your heart, you always seem ready to jump to the fore and offer advice and help..thanks again. I ran over to binder and checked they have a manual for $20 and shipping. I'll get one. I know where the resorvoir is..just wonder how much of a beast it is to repair. I don't like things left unrepaired..I'll have to yank it down as soon as I get it home. I am hoping the machine is what the seller says it is and it'll be field ready with little work..may be a basket of bolts though..just have to see. If you recall a couple weeks ago I was asking about Cubs and you advised a SA or 140. I found this one 75 miles away and decided to take a chance on it. It has culitvators and a IH sidedresser, full wheelweights and nice tires. I gave $1525 for it.
