Sounds like you didn't get the dump valve set right. The purpose of this valve is to dump all the oil pressure out of the TA circut when the clutch pedal is pushed down, disengaging the direct drive hydraulic clutch pack. Now, without going into detail, due to the way the TA works the mechanical sprauge clutch for TA range automatically locks up whenever the input shaft is stopped and the tractor is trying to roll backward. Since your Direct Drive clutch is not being disengaged, it creates the effect of being in Direct Drive and TA at the same time, and just like being caught in two gears at once, this binds up the whole transmission, making shifting hard. To prove this, next time you find yourself in that situation, pull the TA lever back. Doing so will disengage the DD clutch and unbind the transmission. Now, to adjust the dump valve, first get your transmission oil pressure light working. Whenever the light is out and the TA lever is ahead, the DD clutch is engaged. Adjust the dump valve to the point where the oil pressure light goes out just before the main clutch starts to engage as you let up the clutch pedal. Don't adjust it to the point where the main clutch starts to engage before the DD clutch, or you will get very harsh, jerking starts.

I have an 826 as well and have been following your posts. If your clutch is adjusted properly (reread Tractor Vet's excellent directions), then you have a tranny problem I would guess. I don't know enough to tell you exactly what, but the Tractor Vet and K.B. 826 are among the most helpful and knowledgible 826 pros on the board. I sense that you are not a super-experienced tractor tech (niether am I) but I have wrenched on cars professionally for most of my 52 years and can give you some good general advice.

1) Get the repair manual.
2) Don't cut corners unless you know in detail what's around that corner. You can't know unless you've been there!
3) Be patient.
4) Don't assume anything and don't be afraid, or get too lazy, to double, triple and quadruple check things you've already done

If you follow these items, you can dog just about any trouble to a successful conclusion. This is a great board.

Next week I'll be helping to put a clutch in my 826 (slipping under a heavy load and would only grab at the very end of travel) and it was the two guys I mentioned that helped me figure out the problem. Good luck!

$100 says you didn't adjust it correctly.
