greetings,,
seems to me I heard, during the depression some ingenious farmers actually ran their tractors on water. I would guess they were using the hydrogen. Am I correct,, and if so how did they do it..
thanks in advance
jack

If running on water doesn't work, how about trying just hot air? Here's a 2 cylinder Stirling powered tractor. All you have to fill it up with is kindling.

TO run a tractor on water would be steam powered. They never made an engine that would run on water sure would be nice but it just doesent work. They had an attachment that let you add a small amount of water but it was not then or now that an engine will run on water. Your friends must be drinking funny water.

Physically, fuelling an engine with water is impossible! And while it is theoretically possible to dissociate water (separate it into gaseous H2 and O2) then use resulting H2 for motor fuel, the problems of handling and burning hydrogen today are immense. To the typical farmer back in the 30's they would have been insurmountable. Further, dissociating water requires a LOT of energy (electricity). It's unlikely any tractors ever ran on hydrogen fuel.

----

I suspect rather you refer to early tractors which ran on kerosene or distillate. These fuels tend to cause destructive engine knocking under load. One way around this is to add water to the fuel/air mixture at the carburetor - the added water reduces engine knock. Thus these tractors had a separate water tank next to the fuel tank. So a casual observer it might look like the tractor “ran on water”.

Perhaps this is what you heard about??

If I remember what I was told, on the 22-36 there were three tanks, a very small gasoline tank used for starting it up, then about a 15 gallon tank that “power fuel” was put into and then about a 5 gallon take that water (yes H2O) was put into. The carburetor would blend the water and power fuel (after the tractor was warmed up on gasoline) and burn both. Seemed to increase power and let the engine run cleaner and cooler.

Someone else here probably can fill in the gaps that I left.

I suspect what's being partially remembered here is that some tractors that ran on distillate had problems with pre-ignition, and used water injection to cool the incoming charge to control the detonation.

"Running on water" and/or home-made hydrogen production is an urban legend on a par with the 100MPG magic carburator that "the big three" bought out to keep it from coming into production. In other words, bull dookey.

I think that "water" was moonshine.
