Alternator problem?

I have a SuperM with 12 volt conversion that I did not convert myself. Ocasionally the system will not charge. In the past all I had to do was rev the motor maybe 1/2 the total rpm or more and the ammeter would show it was charging. Lately it charges sporadically. Even high rpms will not get the ammeter to show it is chargeing. I have a single wire alternator with 2 switches for the on/off, I believe the second switch just stops it from dischargeing when it is off. Is the alternator in need of replacement? Or is there possible another problem? Is there another way to trigger the chargeing action or is high reving the only way.

I have an M with a one wire alt. Some times I have to rev it up to get it to start to charge maybe 1/3 total rpm. I asked the guy who converted the alt to a one wire and he said that some times when going threw an amp gage it doesn't get the 12 volts it needs to start charging with out reving it up.My tractor only has the switch it came with nothing extra for the alt. The batry has never discharged, some times it sets for 4 months at a time. good luck Dennis in MI

Could also be brushes worn. can't tell without disassembly, though.
