Got It!!! thanks for all you guys's help. The shift stick was out of the rails, pretty simple fix. I'll have to weld up the end of the stick pretty soon so this don't happen again. Thanks again... joe.

Have the shifter built up on the bottom where it goes into the rails. If you don’t have a welder and it will take you a while before you can have it done, you can help prevent this a couple ways. First when you shift it make sure that you move the lever straight back or straight forward until you are in neutral, then move it to the side as desired. Also slow down the speed you are moving the shifter and make sure that you are making a square corner like an H not rounding the corner in a U shift pattern. A lot of us try to do the quick U especially when under a loader and in a hurry.

Good luck.

I had that happen on my 560. Take off the shifter (three bolts) and the you will see the 4 and 5 slider stuck in 4th. Move it back to the center and re-intall the shifter. Eventually you will need to rebuild tip of the shifter.

Besides the stuff the other guys mentioned, the main cause of getting stuck in gear is that the end of the shift lever gets worn, which causes too much slop between the lever and the notches in the shift forks. The fix is to weld up the end of the lever and grind it back to it's original size. One other bit of advice- always hold down the clutch pedal during starting. Not only will doing so prevent runaways like you experienced, it will take the extra load of the transmission off the starter, which will improve starting.

My guess is that the pivot pin in your shifter is worn out or has maybe even gotten pushed out of the hole in the gear shift swivel housing. When this happens the shifter is held up out of its guides enough to where it is possible to get it in two gears at once. The pivot pin (256 919 R11) is held in with two small expansion plugs (172 529).

This may however have absolutely not a thing to do with your problem, but the guys on here will certainly have some good advice for you.

Bill

your shifter stick has come out of the rails, now you are basicaly putting it in two gears and when you pull the lever back you take it out of one gear so it is normal agian. We've had this problem with my 300, you have to take the lever out and use a crowbar to put the rail back in line.
